Meaning:In every moment of battle the bracelet on your gleaming arm dances as you draw the bow; your golden arrows from the quiver strike down the chiefs of the roaring enemy; and on the battlefield where the enemy's four-fold army (elephants, chariots, horses and foot soldiers) is destroyed, the batukas (young attendants of Bhairav) shout in many voices around you.

Ayi sumanahsumanahsumanah sumanahsumanoharakantiyute Shritarajani rajanirajani rajanirajani karavaktravrite | Sunayanavibhramara bhramarabhramara bhramarabhramaradhipate

Meaning:This verse is built on three words repeated in different senses: sumanah (flower, a kind heart, and the gods), rajani (night) and bhramara (bee, and whirling). Only the general sense is clear, and translators differ. The first line praises your radiance as lovelier than flowers; the Gita Press translation of a close variant reads it as radiance made lovelier by the flowers that the pleased gods offer you. The second line says your face is like the moon, 'the maker of night' (rajanikara). The third line compares the restless play of your beautiful eyes with darting bees; its exact grammar is not clear.

This verse too is a play on sounds, and its details are translated differently in different editions.

Meaning:Your spotless forehead, graced by the digit of the moon, is soft and radiant as a lotus petal; you are attended by flocks of swans moving in graceful play, the home of every art and charm; and the blue lilies and bakula flowers in your hair are crowded with swarms of bees.

Meaning:The shimmer of the fine yellow silk at your waist outshines the moon; your toenails shine like moons with the light of the crown jewels of the gods and demons who bow at your feet; and your full bosom, like the brow of a mighty elephant, surpasses the golden mountain in grandeur.

अर्थ:आपकी कमर पर पीले रेशमी वस्त्र की चमक चंद्रमा की कान्ति को भी फीका कर देती है; चरणों में झुके देवताओं और असुरों के मुकुटमणियों की आभा से आपके नख चंद्रमा जैसे चमकते हैं; और गजराज के कुंभ जैसा आपका उन्नत वक्ष स्वर्ण पर्वत की शोभा को भी जीतता है।

Vijitasahasrakaraika sahasrakaraika sahasrakaraikanute Kritasurataraka sangarataraka sangarataraka sunusute | Surathasamadhi samanasamadhi samadhisamadhi sujatarate

Meaning:This verse plays on repeated words, and its first line is read in two ways. It uses sahasrakara (the thousand-rayed sun, or thousand-handed), taraka (saviour, and the demon Taraka) and samadhi (deep meditation, and the merchant Samadhi). The first line praises you as victorious and honoured: the Gita Press translation of a close variant takes it as 'the one whom the thousand-rayed sun alone bows to', while Green Message takes it as 'who conquered thousand-handed foes and is praised by thousands of hands'. The second line says you are the mother of the son (Kartikeya) who saved the gods in the battle with the demon Taraka. The third says you delight in devotion as deep as the meditation of King Suratha and the merchant Samadhi, whose story frames the Devi Mahatmya.

Meaning:O abode of compassion, O most auspicious one, O Kamala (Lakshmi) who dwells in the lotus: how could one who worships your lotus feet every day not himself become a home of Kamala, that is, of fortune? As I hold that your feet alone are the highest state, what could I lack, O Shiva (auspicious Mother)?

अर्थ:हे करुणा की धाम, हे परम कल्याणी, हे कमल में बसने वाली कमला (लक्ष्मी): जो प्रतिदिन आपके चरण-कमलों की उपासना करता है, वह स्वयं कमला अर्थात् श्री का निवास कैसे न बनेगा? जब मैं मानता हूँ कि आपके चरण ही परमपद हैं, तो हे शिवे, मुझे किस बात की कमी रहेगी?

Meaning:Whoever sprinkles the arena of your glories with the gleaming waters of golden rivers, does he not win joy like that of Indra embraced by Shachi? I make your feet my refuge, O goddess to whom the gods bow, in whom speech dwells, who is auspiciousness itself.

अर्थ:जो आपकी महिमा की रंगभूमि को सुनहरी नदियों के चमकते जल से सींचता है, क्या वह शची के आलिंगन में बंधे इंद्र जैसा सुख नहीं पाता? हे देवताओं द्वारा वंदित, वाणी में निवास करने वाली, कल्याणमयी माँ, मैं आपके चरणों को अपनी शरण बनाता हूँ।

Tava vimalendukulam vadanendumalam sakalam nanu kulayate Kimu puruhutapurindumukhi sumukhibhirasau vimukhikriyate | Mama tu matam shivanamadhane bhavati kripaya kimuta kriyate

Meaning:The first line praises your spotless, moon-like face as surpassing every moon; its wording differs between editions and its grammar is not clear. Would the moon-faced beauties of Indra's heaven ever turn away such a devotee? In my view, O you whose wealth is the name of Shiva, what is there that your grace cannot do?

Meaning:O Uma, since you are kind to the helpless, you must be gracious to me. O Mother of the world, you are known to be as compassionate as you truly are. Please accept whatever is fitting here, and take away my great suffering.

अर्थ:हे उमा, आप दीनों पर दयालु हैं, इसलिए मुझ पर भी कृपा कीजिए। हे जगत की जननी, आप जितनी कृपालु हैं, वैसी ही जानी जाती हैं। यहाँ जो उचित हो, उसे स्वीकार कीजिए और मेरे बड़े दुःख को दूर कीजिए।

Sanskrit (संस्कृत)
Who wrote it
Author uncertain (Shankaracharya or Ramakrishna Kavi)The author is uncertain. The hymn is popularly credited to Adi Shankaracharya, and some websites list it among his stotras, but Sanskrit Documents notes that it is absent from his collected works, and we found no early source for that credit. A longer 30-verse form, the 'Bhagavati Padya Pushpanjali Stotram', printed in the Brihat Stotra Ratnakar (Varanasi, 1975) and given on Sanskrit Documents, contains these 21 verses and ends with verses that name its composer as the poet Ramakrishna. The Gita Press Devi Stotra Ratnakar prints the hymn as 'Shri Sankata Stuti' without naming an author. Neither name can be confirmed.

Questions people ask

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Who wrote Aigiri Nandini (Mahishasura Mardini Stotram)?अयि गिरिनन्दिनि (महिषासुरमर्दिनि स्तोत्र) किसने लिखा?

The author is uncertain. It is popularly credited to Adi Shankaracharya, but Sanskrit Documents notes it is not in his collected works. A longer printed form, the Bhagavati Padya Pushpanjali Stotram, ends with verses naming the poet Ramakrishna as its composer. Neither attribution can be confirmed.

How many verses does the Mahishasura Mardini Stotram have?महिषासुरमर्दिनि स्तोत्र में कितने पद हैं?

The version recited today has 21 verses, each ending with the refrain 'Jaya jaya he Mahishasuramardini'. Some printed editions add extra opening and closing verses around these 21.

आज पढ़े जाने वाले संस्करण में 21 पद हैं, और हर पद 'जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि' की टेक पर समाप्त होता है। कुछ छपे संस्करणों में इन 21 के पहले और बाद में अतिरिक्त पद भी हैं।

What does 'Aigiri Nandini' mean?'अयि गिरिनन्दिनि' का क्या अर्थ है?

'Ayi giri nandini' means 'O daughter of the mountain'. It addresses the Goddess as Parvati, daughter of the Himalaya. The refrain praises her as the slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, daughter of the mountain.

'अयि गिरिनन्दिनि' का अर्थ है 'हे पर्वत की पुत्री'। इसमें देवी को हिमालय की पुत्री पार्वती के रूप में पुकारा गया है। टेक में उन्हें महिषासुर का वध करने वाली, सुंदर जटाओं वाली, पर्वत की पुत्री कहा गया है।

When is Aigiri Nandini chanted?अयि गिरिनन्दिनि का पाठ कब किया जाता है?

Most often during Navratri and Durga Puja, especially on Ashtami, Navami and Vijayadashami. It can be recited on any day as a prayer to the Goddess.

सबसे अधिक नवरात्रि और दुर्गा पूजा में, विशेषकर अष्टमी, नवमी और विजयादशमी पर। देवी की प्रार्थना के रूप में इसे किसी भी दिन पढ़ा जा सकता है।

Why are some verses hard to translate?कुछ पदों का अनुवाद कठिन क्यों है?

Several verses are built on sound and word-play, repeating one word in different senses (for example sumanah, rajani and bhramara in verse 11). Translations therefore give the general sense rather than a word-for-word meaning, and published translations differ in places.

कई पद ध्वनि और शब्द-खेल पर बने हैं, जिनमें एक ही शब्द अलग-अलग अर्थों में दोहराया गया है (जैसे पद 11 में सुमनः, रजनी और भ्रमर)। इसलिए अनुवाद शब्दशः के बजाय सामान्य भाव देते हैं, और छपे अनुवादों में कहीं-कहीं अंतर मिलता है।

Which version we use

Verifier (2026-09-16). Witnesses, counted by independent family: (A) Green Message, BhaktiBharat and Drik Panchang, which share typos and count once; (B) Vaidika Vignanam and Stotra Nidhi, which share one text and count once; (C) Sanskrit Documents; (D) the Brihat Stotra Ratnakar, Varanasi 1975 (printed; the same 30-verse 'Bhagavati Padya Pushpanjali' as Sanskrit Documents, with its own readings); (E) the Gita Press Devi Stotra Ratnakar 'Shri Sankata Stuti' (printed, with Hindi translation). D and E were read from the page images. All witnesses have the same 21 verses; A, B, C and D also have them in the same order. E orders them differently and differs in many lines, so it is used line by line as a witness and for sense, not as the base text. C and D add six opening and three closing verses, and E one closing verse; these are left out. Every line matches at least one witness verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing). Where families split, the majority of independent families decides; printed witnesses rank above web copies, and grammar or the story can confirm a reading. The refrain is kept as one verse. Changed by the verifier: V4 line 3 'निपातितखण्ड विपातितमुण्ड' (A, B, C) -> 'निजभुजदण्ड निपातितचण्ड विपाटितमुण्ड भटाधिपते' (E verbatim; D 'निपातितचंडविपातितमुंड'; B and C list 'चण्ड' as a variant): the line names Chanda and Munda, the paired demon commanders of the Devi Mahatmya, and both printed editions read it. V9 line 1 'कृताभिनयोदर' (A, B) -> 'सुरललना ततथेयि तथेयि तथाभिनयोत्तर नृत्यरते' (C and E verbatim; D 'तथाभिनयोत्तम'): three witnesses including both printed ones against two web families, and 'अभिनयोदर' does not parse. V19 line 1 'अनुसिञ्चिनुते गुणरङ्गभुवं' (B, C, D) -> 'कनकलसत्कलसिन्धुजलैरनुषिञ्चति ते गुणरङ्गभुवम्' (A verbatim; E 'अनुषिञ्चति तेऽङ्गणरङ्गभुवं'; C lists 'षिञ्चति ते' as a variant): 'सिञ्चिनुते' is not a Sanskrit verb form, while 'अनुषिञ्चति' (sprinkles) is the regular form and gives the line its subject for 'भजति स किं न' in line 2. Kept after checking: V1 'नन्दिनुते' (A, B, E) vs 'नन्दनुते' (C, D). V1 'शिरोधिनिवासिनि' (B, C, D) vs 'शिरोऽधिनिवासिनि' (A, E), same sound. V2 'किल्बिषमोषिणि घोषरते' (A, C, D) vs 'कल्मषमोषिणि घोररते' (B) and 'कल्मषमोषिणि घोषरते' (E). V4 line 2 'पराक्रमशुण्ड' (A, B, C, D) vs 'पराक्रमशौण्ड' (E, C's variant). V6 line 3 'दुन्दुभिनादमहोमुखरीकृत तिग्मकरे' (B, C, D) vs 'धुन्दुभि... दिङ्मकरे' (A) and 'मुहुर्मुखरीकृतदिङ्निकरे' (E). V8 'धनुरनुषङ्ग' (A, C, E) vs 'धनुरनुसङ्ग' (B, D); 'हतावटुके' (B, C, D) vs 'हताबटुके' (A, E). V9 lines 2 and 3 (A, B; E has the same words in other spellings) vs different lines in C and D ('हासविलासहुलासमयि प्रणतार्तजनेऽमितप्रेमभरे', 'धिमिकिटधिक्कट...'). V10 line 2 'झणझणझिञ्झिमि झिङ्कृत नूपुरशिञ्जितमोहित भूतपते' (A; E same words) vs B 'भण भण भिञ्जिमि...' and C, D 'सिञ्जित'. V12 'झिल्लिकभिल्लिक' (A, C) vs 'भिल्लिक भिल्लिक' (B); 'सितकृतफुल्ल' (B, C, D) vs 'शितकृतफुल्ल' (A). V15 line 2 'मिलितपुलिन्द' (A, B, D) vs 'मिलितमिलिन्द' (C, E); line 3 'निजगुणभूत' (B, C, D) vs 'निजगणभूत' (A, E). V16 line 3 'मौलिमदोर्जित निर्भरकुञ्जर' (A; E 'मौलिमदोर्जितगर्जित'; C's variant 'मदोर्जित') vs 'मौलिपदोर्जित निर्भरकुञ्जर' (B), 'मौलिपदोर्जितनिर्जर' (C) and 'मौलिपदोर्जितनिर्झर' (D): no whole line has a majority; 'मद' (the rut of the elephant in the same compound) is confirmed by the sense and by E. V18 'सुशिवे' (A, C, E) vs 'स शिवे' (B, D); 'परम्पदमित्यनुशीलयतो' (A, B) vs 'परम्पदमेवनुशीलयतो' (C, D), which breaks sandhi, and E 'परं पदमस्त्विति शीलयतो'. V19 line 3 'नतामरवाणि निवासि शिवं' (B, C) vs 'शिवम्' (A), 'शिवे' (D) and E 'सुवाणि पथं मम देहि शिवं'. V20 line 1 'विमलेन्दुकुलं ... सकलं ननु कूलयते' (A, B, C) vs 'विमलेन्दुकलं' (D) and E 'विमलेन्दुकलं ... कलयन्ननुकूलयते'. V20 line 3 'किमुत क्रियते' (A, B, C, D) vs 'किमु न क्रियते' (E, C's variant). V21 lines 2 and 3 (A, B, C, D) vs different lines in E.
