अन्नपूर्णा हुई जग पाला। तुम ही आदि सुन्दरी बाला॥

Annapurna hui jag pala | Tum hi adi sundari bala ||

Meaning:As Annapurna, the goddess of food, you nourish the world. You are also the primal, beautiful maiden (Bala).

अर्थ:अन्नपूर्णा बनकर आप जगत का पालन करती हैं। आप ही आदि सुंदरी बाला हैं।

प्रलयकाल सब नाशन हारी। तुम गौरी शिवशंकर प्यारी॥

Pralaykal sab nashan hari | Tum Gauri Shivshankar pyari ||

Meaning:At the time of pralaya (the dissolution of the world) you are the one who ends everything. You are Gauri, the beloved of Shiv Shankar.

रक्षा करि प्रह्लाद बचायो। हिरणाकुश को स्वर्ग पठायो॥

Raksha kari Prahlad bachayo | Hiranakush ko swarg pathayo ||

Meaning:You protected Prahlad and saved him, and sent Hiranakush to heaven. Hiranakush is the Hindi form of Hiranyakashipu, Prahlad's demon father, whom Narasimha killed; to be slain by the divine is traditionally understood as liberation, hence 'sent to heaven'. Many websites print 'Hiranyaksha' here, but he was Hiranyakashipu's brother, killed by the Varaha (boar) avatar, not by Narasimha.

Shumbh Nishumbh danav tum mare | Raktabeej shankhan sanhare ||

Meaning:You killed the demons Shumbh and Nishumbh and destroyed Raktabeej. The word 'shankhan' is unclear, and we found no reliable commentary that explains it. One translation (Sanskrit Documents) understands the line as destroying Raktabeej's countless copies: in the Devi Mahatmya every drop of his blood that fell to the ground became another demon. That reading is possible but not certain.

About Durga Chalisa

चालीसा के बारे में

The Durga Chalisa is a devotional Hindi hymn of forty chaupais to Goddess Durga, followed by a closing couplet. It praises her many forms, from Annapurna, Saraswati and Lakshmi to Kali and several of the Mahavidyas, recalls her victories over Mahishasur, Shumbh and Nishumbh, and ends with a personal prayer for her protection.

When to recite · कब पढ़ें

Devotees traditionally recite it during the nine nights of Navratri (Chaitra and Sharad), on Durga Ashtami and during Durga Puja. Many households also recite it every day, in the morning or at the evening lamp-lighting. There is no fixed rule about the time.

परंपरा के अनुसार भक्त इसे चैत्र और शारदीय नवरात्रि के नौ दिनों में, दुर्गा अष्टमी पर और दुर्गा पूजा के समय पढ़ते हैं। कई घरों में इसका रोज़ सुबह या संध्या-दीप के समय पाठ होता है। समय को लेकर कोई कठोर नियम नहीं है।

How to recite · कैसे पढ़ें

Sit before an image of Maa Durga, light a lamp if you wish, and recite the forty chaupais and the closing couplet at a steady pace. Many devotees follow the chalisa with the aarti 'Jai Ambe Gauri'.

माँ दुर्गा के चित्र के सामने बैठें, चाहें तो दीपक जलाएँ, और चालीस चौपाइयाँ तथा समापन चौपाई स्थिर गति से पढ़ें। कई भक्त चालीसा के बाद 'जय अम्बे गौरी' आरती गाते हैं।

Questions people ask

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Who wrote the Durga Chalisa?दुर्गा चालीसा किसने लिखी?

The closing couplet names Devidas, and tradition takes him as the poet. No other reliable details about him are known.

अंतिम चौपाई में देवीदास का नाम आता है और परंपरा उन्हें ही रचयिता मानती है। उनके बारे में और कोई प्रामाणिक जानकारी नहीं मिलती।

When should the Durga Chalisa be recited?दुर्गा चालीसा कब पढ़नी चाहिए?

It is most widely recited during Chaitra and Sharad Navratri, on Durga Ashtami and during Durga Puja. Many devotees also read it daily, morning or evening. You can read it at any time with a calm mind.

चैत्र और शारदीय नवरात्रि, दुर्गा अष्टमी और दुर्गा पूजा के समय इसका सबसे अधिक पाठ होता है। कई भक्त रोज़ सुबह या शाम भी पढ़ते हैं। शांत मन से इसे कभी भी पढ़ा जा सकता है।

How many times should I read the Durga Chalisa during Navratri?नवरात्रि में दुर्गा चालीसा कितनी बार पढ़ें?

There is no fixed number. One complete reading is a full recitation. Some devotees keep a personal vow, such as one reading on each of the nine days; the tradition values devotion over the count.

कोई निश्चित संख्या नहीं है। एक बार पूरा पढ़ना भी संपूर्ण पाठ है। कुछ भक्त नौ दिनों तक रोज़ एक पाठ जैसा निजी संकल्प लेते हैं; परंपरा में गिनती से अधिक भाव को महत्व दिया जाता है।

What does 'Namo namo Durge sukh karni' mean?'नमो नमो दुर्गे सुख करनी' का क्या अर्थ है?

It means 'I bow again and again to Durga, who gives happiness'. The next line, 'Namo namo Ambe dukh harni', means 'I bow again and again to Ambe, who removes sorrow'.

इसका अर्थ है, 'सुख देने वाली दुर्गा को बार-बार नमस्कार'। अगली पंक्ति 'नमो नमो अम्बे दुःख हरनी' का अर्थ है, 'दुःख हरने वाली अम्बे को बार-बार नमस्कार'।

Is the Durga Chalisa the same as the Durga Saptashati?क्या दुर्गा चालीसा और दुर्गा सप्तशती एक ही हैं?

No. The Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya) is a Sanskrit text of 700 verses from the Markandeya Purana. The Durga Chalisa is a short Hindi hymn of forty chaupais that recalls some of the same stories.

नहीं। दुर्गा सप्तशती (देवी माहात्म्य) मार्कण्डेय पुराण का 700 श्लोकों वाला संस्कृत ग्रंथ है। दुर्गा चालीसा चालीस चौपाइयों की छोटी हिंदी स्तुति है, जिसमें उन्हीं में से कुछ कथाओं का स्मरण है।

We checked every line of this chalisa against these sources before publishing it (checked on 16 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

Verifier (2026-09-16) compared 11 witnesses and counted only independent ones. Web: Sanskrit Documents numbered copy (SD) and its second 'मूल पाठ' copy (SD2), BhaktiBharat (BB) and Webdunia (WD), which copy SD almost word for word and count as one, Vaidika Vignanam (VG), Green Message (GM), DrikPanchang (DP), Bharat Discovery (BD, close to SD2). Print: Gita Press booklet 1033 (GP, read page by page from the scan, not the OCR; the OCR wrongly gives 'भाजे', 'अन', 'है' where the page prints 'भाजै', 'अन्न', 'ह्वै'), Lakshmi Publication Durga Saptashati with Chalisa (LP, scan checked), Randhir Prakashan 51 Chalisa Sangrah (RC, scan lacks chaupais 34-36 and 39 to the end) and an Aarti Chalisa Sangrah scan (AC, two copies; copy 1 shares Randhir's layout). Every half-line matches at least one witness verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing). Spelling-only differences (अम्बे/अंबे, ै/े/ें endings, यश/जस) follow the majority web spelling; where readings differ in words, the independent majority decides, with the Gita Press text breaking ties. Changed by the verifier: Ch 5 'शक्ति लै कीना' -> 'तुम संसार शक्ति लय कीना' (VG, DP, BD, RC, AC, SD2 verbatim; GP 'सक्ति लय कीन्हा'; only SD group and GM read 'लै'). Ch 11 'हिरण्याक्ष' -> 'हिरणाकुश को स्वर्ग पठायो' (SD2, BD, RC, LP, AC verbatim; GP 'हिरनाकुस'): 'हिरण्याक्ष' (SD group, VG, GM, DP) names the wrong demon, since the chaupai describes Narasimha, who killed Hiranyakashipu. Ch 20 'तिहुँ' -> 'तिहूँ लोक में डंका बाजत' (GP, RC, LP verbatim), matching Ch 2. Ch 25 'तब महिमा' -> 'तव महिमा सब रहें अशोका' (LP verbatim; GP 'तव महिमा सब रहै असोका'): 'तव' means 'your', which is the sense of the line; the web 'तब' ('then') is the common ब/व confusion. Kept after checking: Ch 1 'अम्बे' (all but the SD group) vs 'दुर्गे'. Ch 10 'धरा रूप' (GM, RC, VG, GP) vs 'धरयो' (SD, SD2) and LP 'धरौ'. Ch 15 'मातंगी धूमावति माता' (VG, GM, GP, LP) vs 'मातंगी अरु धूमावति माता' (SD, SD2); the shorter line fits the 16-beat chaupai. Ch 20 'नगरकोट' (SD, GM, GP, LP) vs 'नगर कोटि' (VG, DP, BD, SD2, AC): Nagarkot is the old name of Kangra, so sense and Gita Press confirm it. Ch 23 'कालिका' (SD, SD2, VG, GM, DP, BD, AC) vs 'काली को' (GP, RC, LP); same meaning. Ch 25 'अमरपुरी अरु बासव लोका' (all but GP, RC 'अमर पुरी औरों सब लोका'). Ch 30 'काम अरु क्रोध' (all but GP, LP 'काम क्रोध'). Ch 33 'शरणागत हुई' (web and RC) vs GP 'सरनागत ह्वै', LP 'शरणागति हो'. Ch 36 'रिपु मूरख मोहि अति डरपावै' (GP verbatim; LP 'मोहिं'; VG, WD, AC copy 1 same words) vs 'मोह मदादिक सब विनशावै' (SD, SD2, BD, GM, DP, AC copy 2): five independent witnesses each, Gita Press followed. Ch 40 'दुर्गा चालीसा जो कोई गावै' (GP, WD; SD 'श्री दुर्गा...') vs 'जो नित गावै' (GM, DP, BD) and 'जो गावै' (VG, LP, AC): three-way tie, Gita Press followed. BB, RC, LP and AC add a closing doha ('शरणागत रक्षा करे, भक्त रहे निःशंक'); GP and the other web texts do not, so it is left out.
