About Sarva Mangala Mangalye

मंत्र के बारे में

Sarva Mangala Mangalye is a single Sanskrit verse from the Durga Saptashati that salutes the Goddess as the auspiciousness in everything auspicious, the fulfiller of every aim, the refuge of all, the three-eyed Gauri and Narayani. It comes from the Narayani Stuti and is also recited on its own as a short prayer.

सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये दुर्गा सप्तशती का एक संस्कृत श्लोक है, जिसमें देवी को सब मंगलों का मंगल, सब प्रयोजन सिद्ध करने वाली, सबकी शरण, तीन नेत्रों वाली गौरी और नारायणी कहकर नमन किया गया है। यह नारायणी स्तुति का श्लोक है और अलग से छोटी प्रार्थना के रूप में भी पढ़ा जाता है।

When to recite · कब पढ़ें

It is recited as part of the Durga Saptashati path, especially during Chaitra and Sharad Navratri, and on its own as a short prayer to the Goddess in daily worship, at the start of Durga Puja or at the close of a prayer.

इसका पाठ दुर्गा सप्तशती के पाठ के साथ होता है, विशेषकर चैत्र और शारदीय नवरात्रि में, और रोज़ की पूजा में, दुर्गा पूजा के आरंभ में या प्रार्थना के अंत में देवी की छोटी स्तुति के रूप में अलग से भी।

How to recite · कैसे पढ़ें

Fold your hands before an image of the Goddess and recite the two lines slowly. Some devotees repeat the verse three times.

देवी के चित्र के सामने हाथ जोड़कर दोनों पंक्तियाँ धीरे-धीरे पढ़ें। कुछ भक्त इस श्लोक को तीन बार दोहराते हैं।

Questions people ask

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Where does 'Sarva Mangala Mangalye' come from?'सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये' कहाँ से है?

It is verse 10 of chapter 11 of the Devi Mahatmya, also called the Durga Saptashati, from the Markandeya Purana. Chapter 11 contains the Narayani Stuti, the gods' hymn of thanks after the Goddess defeats Shumbh.

यह मार्कण्डेय पुराण के देवी माहात्म्य (दुर्गा सप्तशती) के ग्यारहवें अध्याय का दसवाँ श्लोक है। ग्यारहवें अध्याय में नारायणी स्तुति है, जिसे देवी द्वारा शुम्भ को परास्त करने के बाद देवता कृतज्ञता में गाते हैं।

What does 'Narayani namostute' mean?'नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते' का क्या अर्थ है?

It means 'O Narayani, salutations to you'. Narayani is a name of the Goddess, and many verses of the Narayani Stuti end with this line.

इसका अर्थ है 'हे नारायणी, आपको नमस्कार है'। नारायणी देवी का एक नाम है, और नारायणी स्तुति के अनेक श्लोक इसी पंक्ति पर समाप्त होते हैं।

Why do some versions write गौरी नारायणी instead of गौरि नारायणि?'गौरि नारायणि' सही है या 'गौरी नारायणी'?

In Sanskrit the words are 'Gauri' and 'Narayani' with short final vowels (गौरि, नारायणि), because the Goddess is being addressed directly. Many Hindi prints write them with long vowels (गौरी, नारायणी), following Hindi spelling habits; in the Sanskrit verse the short vowels are the correct forms.

संस्कृत में देवी को सीधे संबोधित करने के कारण ये शब्द ह्रस्व अंत वाले 'गौरि' और 'नारायणि' हैं। कई हिंदी प्रकाशनों में हिंदी वर्तनी की आदत से इन्हें दीर्घ मात्रा से 'गौरी', 'नारायणी' लिखा जाता है; संस्कृत श्लोक में ह्रस्व रूप ही सही हैं।

Can I recite this verse without the full Durga Saptashati?क्या पूरी दुर्गा सप्तशती के बिना यह श्लोक पढ़ सकते हैं?

Yes. Many devotees recite this single verse on its own as a prayer to the Goddess. In the full Saptashati path it is read as part of chapter 11.

हाँ। कई भक्त इस एक श्लोक को अलग से देवी-प्रार्थना के रूप में पढ़ते हैं। पूरी सप्तशती के पाठ में यह ग्यारहवें अध्याय के भाग के रूप में पढ़ा जाता है।

Which version we use

Sanskrit Documents (durga700, 11.10), Green Message and BhaktiBharat's 'मूल मंत्र' agree letter for letter: 'सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके । शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते ॥'. The Gita Press Nitya Karma Puja Prakash prints the same words ('सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये! शिवे! ... त्र्यम्बके! गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते', page image checked). The Gita Press Durga Saptashati, read from its page images (11.10 on page 142, and again in the Saptashloki Durga on page 6), prints 'सर्वमङ्गलमङ्गल्ये' in the main text and gives 'माङ्गल्ये' as a variant reading in a footnote. Both forms are grammatical ('the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious' vs 'the most auspicious of all auspicious things'); 'माङ्गल्ये' is used here because four witnesses, including a Gita Press book, print it, and Gita Press itself records it. The second line is identical in every witness. Popular Hindi prints, including BhaktiBharat's first display, write 'सर्व मंगल मांगल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थ साधिके। शरण्ये त्र्यंबके गौरी नारायणी नमोस्तुते॥'; these are spacing and spelling differences only (anusvara for ङ्ग, long ी for the Sanskrit vocative ि, 'नमोस्तुते' for 'नमोऽस्तु ते'). The Sanskrit spelling is used here.
