About Sharad Navratri
Sharad Navratri is the nine nights of Goddess Durga in the bright half of Ashwin, starting the morning after Sarva Pitru Amavasya. Each day honours one of the nine forms of the Devi, and Vijayadashami follows on the tenth day.
शारदीय नवरात्रि आश्विन शुक्ल पक्ष में मां दुर्गा की नौ रातें हैं, जो सर्व पितृ अमावस्या के अगले दिन शुरू होती हैं। हर दिन देवी के नौ रूपों में से एक की पूजा होती है, और दसवें दिन विजयादशमी आती है।
What to do on Sharad Navratri
शारदीय नवरात्रि की सरल विधि
- Clean the puja place and set the kalash on a bed of soil sown with barley (jau), on Pratipada morning.
- Fill the kalash with water, place mango leaves and a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top, and invoke the Devi.
- Light a lamp; many families keep an akhand jyoti burning for the nine days.
- Worship the form of the Devi for each day, and recite the Durga Chalisa or the Durga Saptashati as your family does.
- Keep the fast your health and family practice allow, and do Kanya Pujan on Ashtami or Navami.
- प्रतिपदा की सुबह पूजा स्थान साफ़ करके मिट्टी में जौ बोएं और उस पर कलश रखें।
- कलश में जल भरें, ऊपर आम के पत्ते और लाल कपड़े में लिपटा नारियल रखें, और देवी का आवाहन करें।
- दीपक जलाएं; कई परिवार नौ दिन अखंड ज्योति जलाते हैं।
- हर दिन देवी के उस दिन के रूप की पूजा करें, और परिवार की परंपरा के अनुसार दुर्गा चालीसा या दुर्गा सप्तशती का पाठ करें।
- अपने स्वास्थ्य और परंपरा के अनुसार व्रत रखें, और अष्टमी या नवमी को कन्या पूजन करें।

If you cannot reach a temple, a pandit can perform a Durga archana or pooja at the temple in your name and gotra on the day you choose. Photo proof is sent to you after the pooja.
