About Jai Ambe Gauri

Jai Ambe Gauri is the best-known aarti of Goddess Durga (Ambe) in north India. It describes her adornments and her lion, recalls her victories over Mahishasur, Shumbh, Nishumbh, Chand, Mund and Madhu-Kaitabh, and praises her as Brahmani, Rudrani and Lakshmi. It is sung while waving the lamp at the end of Durga worship.

When to recite ·

It is sung at the close of Durga worship, especially every morning and evening of Chaitra and Sharad Navratri, on Durga Ashtami and during Durga Puja. Many families sing it daily at the evening lamp-lighting.

How to recite ·

Light a lamp or camphor in a plate and wave it in circles before the image of the Goddess while singing. Sing the refrain 'Jai Ambe Gauri' first and repeat it after every verse.

When is Jai Ambe Gauri sung?

It is sung at the end of Durga worship, especially in the morning and evening during Navratri, on Durga Ashtami and at Durga Puja. Many families sing it every evening.

What does 'Hari Brahma Shivri' mean?'

The full line means 'Hari (Vishnu), Brahma and Shiva meditate on you day and night'. 'Ri' is not part of Shiva's name: it is a folk way of calling out to a woman, here the Goddess, like saying 'O Mother'. The Gita Press Aarti Sangrah prints it as a separate word, 'शिव री'; its Nitya Karma Puja Prakash prints 'शिव जी' instead.

Is 'Jai Ambe Gauri' the same aarti as 'Ambe Tu Hai Jagdambe Kali'?

No. They are two different aartis of the Goddess. 'Jai Ambe Gauri' is the one printed in the Gita Press aarti collections; 'Ambe Tu Hai Jagdambe Kali' is a separate, popular aarti.

We checked every line of this aarti against these sources before publishing it (checked on 16 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

Verifier (2026-09-16) compared 11 witnesses. Gita Press: Aarti Sangrah 'श्रीअम्बाजी' and Nitya Karma Puja Prakash 'श्रीअम्बाजीकी आरती', both read from the page images (not the OCR) and counted as one witness (GP). Web: BhaktiBharat (BB), DrikPanchang (DP), Aarti Sandhya (AS), two Webdunia pages (WD, one site), Sanskrit Documents durga40 (SD). Print: Randhir Prakashan 51 Chalisa Sangrah (RC), an Aarti Chalisa Sangrah scan (AC) and the Lakshmi Publication Durga Saptashati (LP). All witnesses except WD have the refrain and the same 12 verses in the same order; WD reorders verses and drops verse 9. Every line matches at least one witness verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing). Changed by the verifier: V8 line 1 'चौंसठ योगिनी मंगल गावत' (DP only) -> 'चौंसठ योगिनि गावत, नृत्य करत भैरूँ' (GP verbatim). 'मंगल' is in DP, BB, AS and WD only; GP, SD, RC, AC and LP do not have it, and without it the line has the same length as its partner lines. V12 line 2 'कहत शिवानंद स्वामी, सुख सम्पति पावै' matched no witness as a whole (it joined BB/WD 'शिवानंद' to GP 'सम्पति') -> 'कहत शिवानँद स्वामी, सुख सम्पति पावै' (GP verbatim; DP and LP 'शिवानन्द ... Kept after checking: refrain 'हरि ब्रह्मा शिवरी' (GP Aarti Sangrah 'शिव री', DP, AS, WD, RC, AC) vs 'शिव जी' (GP Nitya Karma Puja Prakash, SD). V1 'मांग सिंदूर' (BB, AS, RC, AC) vs 'माँग' (both GP books, DP, SD): spelling only. V4 'सम राजत ज्योती' (GP, BB; DP, AS, SD, AC 'ज्योति') vs 'राजत सम ज्योति' (WD, RC, LP). V5 'शुम्भ निशुम्भ विदारे' (GP, RC, AC, LP) vs 'बिदारे/बिडारे' (BB, DP, AS, WD). V8 line 2 'अरू बाजत डमरू' (BB, WD) vs 'अरु' (DP, AS, RC), 'औ' (GP) and 'और' (SD, LP); 'अरु' is the majority word. (DP, AS, RC, AC, LP): same word, Gita Press spelling. V11 and V12: GP prints '(श्री)' in brackets before 'मालकेतु' and 'अम्बेजी'; the other witnesses print 'श्री' as part of the line. SD has a few readings no other witness shares ('सुर भय दूर करे', 'देवता नर नारी'); they are not followed.
