About Om Jai Jagdish Hare

The most widely sung aarti in Hindu homes, addressed to Vishnu as Jagdish, the Lord of the universe. The devotee calls the Lord mother, father and friend of the humble, confesses their faults and asks for faith, devotion and the company of saints.

When to recite ·

It is sung at the end of daily pooja and at most household and temple ceremonies, including Satyanarayan Katha, Ekadashi and festival pujas. Many families sing it after the aarti of the main deity of the day.

How to recite ·

Wave a lit diya or camphor in slow circles before the deity while singing, and sing the refrain after every verse. When sung, the second half of the first line of each verse is usually repeated with 'Swami' added (for example 'Swami dukh binse man ka'), and many singers add 'Das janon ke sankat' after 'Bhakt janon ke sankat'.

Who wrote it
Traditionally attributed to Pandit Shardha Ram PhillauriWidely credited to Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri (Shardha Ram Sharma, 1837-1881) of Phillaur, Punjab, who is said to have written it around 1870. The credit rests on later accounts: we found no printing from his lifetime that names him, the Gita Press text names no author, and some versions end with a line naming 'Shivanand Swami' (a closing line that also appears in other aartis). So we list the attribution as traditional rather than settled.

Questions people ask

Who wrote Om Jai Jagdish Hare?

It is widely credited to Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri of Punjab, who is said to have written it around 1870. That credit comes from later accounts rather than a printing from his lifetime, and some versions end with a line naming 'Shivanand Swami', so the authorship is best described as traditional.

Which god is Om Jai Jagdish Hare sung for?

It is addressed to Vishnu as Jagdish, the Lord of the universe. Because it praises the Supreme Lord in general terms, many families sing it at the end of pujas for other deities too.

Why do some versions have 'Tan man dhan...' or 'Kahat Shivanand Swami'?

Some families and websites add a verse about offering the Lord what is already his ('Tan man dhan... tera tujhko arpan kya lage mera') and a closing verse naming Shivanand Swami. Neither is in the Gita Press Aarti Sangrah text or in most of the sources we checked, so we have not included them in the verses above.

What does 'Main moorakh khal kami' mean?'

It means 'I am foolish, wicked and full of desires'. The devotee admits their own faults before asking the Lord for kindness. Some singers use 'Main moorakh phalkami', meaning 'a fool who wants rewards'.

Nasal vowels are written with chandrabindu (गहूँ, करूँ, मिलूँ) as in GP and DP.
