Meaning:His body has a dark glow like the sky, and beside him Radhika shines, O friend. Banmali, who wears a garland of forest flowers, stands among the creepers, with curls dark as bees, a musk tilak on his brow and a glow like the moon. Such is the lovely form of the beloved of Shyama. (Shyama is a name of Radha; some singers take 'Shyama pyari' to mean Radha herself.)

Meaning:The Ganga came forth from them: Shri Ganga, who washes away all impurity, whose remembrance breaks the spell of delusion, who lives in Shiva's matted hair and washes away the mud of sin. Such is the beauty of the feet of Shri Banwari (Krishna).

Questions people ask

When is Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki sung?

It is sung in the daily morning and evening worship of Krishna and Laddu Gopal, and most of all at midnight on Janmashtami, after Krishna's birth is celebrated.

What does Kunj Bihari mean?

Kunj means a grove or bower and Bihari means one who wanders or plays. Kunj Bihari is Krishna who plays in the groves of Vrindavan. Giridhar means the lifter of the mountain (Govardhan), and Murari means the enemy of the demon Mura.

Why does a Krishna aarti mention the Ganga?

The fourth verse describes the Lord's feet. In Puranic tradition the Ganga flows from the feet of Vishnu, and Krishna is worshipped as Vishnu, so the aarti praises his feet as the source of the Ganga that Shiva holds in his hair.

Why do different versions have different words?

This aarti is in the Braj dialect and has been passed down orally, so spellings and a few words vary, such as 'Sakal mal harini' or 'Kalush kali harini', and 'deen dukhari' or 'deen bhikhari'. We follow the reading most sources agree on; where they split evenly we follow the Gita Press Aarti Sangrah. The differences are listed in our variant note.
