About Jai Ganesh Deva

Jai Ganesh Deva is one of the most widely sung Hindi aartis of Ganesh in north India. It praises him as the son of Parvati and Mahadev (Shiva), describes his form and the offerings made to him, and asks for his kindness. It is sung while waving the aarti lamp at the end of Ganesh worship.

When to recite ·

It is traditionally sung at the end of any Ganesh puja, every morning and evening during Ganesh Chaturthi, on Wednesdays and Sankashti Chaturthi, and at the start of household ceremonies, since Ganesh is worshipped first.

How to recite ·

Light a ghee or camphor lamp on a plate and wave it in circles before the image of Ganesh while singing. The refrain 'Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva, Mata jaki Parvati pita Mahadeva' is sung at the start and again after every verse.

Questions people ask

Who wrote the aarti 'Jai Ganesh Deva'?'

Its author is not known. Many versions include the signature line 'Sur Shyam sharan aaye', and some sites credit the poet Surdas, but there is no reliable evidence for this, and the Gita Press Aarti Sangrah prints the aarti without that line. It is best treated as a traditional folk aarti.

When is Ganesh ji ki aarti sung?

At the end of Ganesh puja, every morning and evening during Ganesh Chaturthi, on Wednesdays and on Sankashti Chaturthi. Because Ganesh is worshipped first, it is also sung at the start of weddings, housewarmings and other ceremonies.

What does 'Mata jaki Parvati pita Mahadeva' mean?'

It means 'whose mother is Parvati and whose father is Mahadev'. Mahadev, the great god, is a name of Shiva, so the line praises Ganesh as the son of Shiva and Parvati.

Why do different books show different lines of this aarti?

It is a folk aarti passed on by singing, so small changes crept in. Some versions say 'mathe sindoor sohe' or 'mathe par tilak sohe' instead of 'mastak sindoor sohe', 'haar' (garland) or 'phal' (fruit) instead of 'paan' and 'phool', 'Shambhu sutkari' and 'jaun balihari' in the last verse, and some leave out the 'Sur Shyam' line or the last verse. The text here follows the Gita Press Aarti Sangrah and other printed booklets where they agree. The meaning stays the same.

We checked every line of this aarti against these sources before publishing it (checked on 17 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

A folk aarti with real variation. Witnesses, all compared line by line: three printed texts read from page images, the Gita Press Aarti Sangrah (GP, 2018 reprint), Randhir Prakashan, Haridwar (RP, 2000) and a Hari Darshan Prakashan, Delhi poster (HD); and web texts from Webdunia, Green Message, Sanskrit Documents, Dharmkahani, Sanatan Aaradhana and one text shared word for word by Hinduism FAQ, Mantramaya and India TV (counted once, HFAQ). Two more scans in the Aarti Chalisa Sangrah item are a typeset copy of Sanskrit Documents and a web image, so they are not counted. Every half-line matches at least one witness verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing). Following the witness ranking, a Gita Press reading stands against a web majority, and printed texts come next. Verse order refrain, एक दंत, अंधन, पान follows GP and HD (also Webdunia and Sanatan Aaradhana); Sanskrit Documents, Green Message, HFAQ and Dharmkahani put the पान verse second, and RP puts it first. GP also prints this line first in the verse, all other witnesses second. Verse 4 'सूर श्याम शरण आए सफल कीजे सेवा' (Sanskrit Documents, HFAQ, Dharmkahani, Sanatan Aaradhana; RP 'सूरश्याम शरण आये सुफल कीजे सेवा', printed at the very end) is not in GP, HD, Webdunia or Green Message; it is kept because it is widely sung and it is the only authorship clue. Verse 5 'दीनन की लाज राखो शम्भु-सुतवारी' and 'कामना को पूरा करो जग बलिहारी' (GP; RP identical apart from spacing 'शम्भु-सुत वारी') over the web reading 'दीनन की लाज रखो शंभु सुतकारी' and 'कामना को पूर्ण करो जाऊं बलिहारी' (Webdunia, HFAQ; Dharmkahani 'जय बलिहारी'); a web image in the Aarti Chalisa Sangrah scan has 'राखो, शम्भु पुत्र वारी ... जय बलिहारी', which supports reading 'सुतवारी' as 'सुत' (son) + 'वारी' (devoted). Verse 5 is absent from HD, Green Message, Sanskrit Documents and Sanatan Aaradhana. Spelling-only differences (एकदन्त/एक दंत, अन्धन/अंधन, आँख/आंख, पारवती) are not listed.
