About Shiv Panchakshar Stotram

स्तोत्र के बारे में

The Shiv Panchakshar Stotram is a short Sanskrit hymn built on the five syllables of the mantra 'Namah Shivaya': na, ma, shi, va, ya. Each of its five verses praises Shiva through names and images and ends by saluting him as one of the five syllables. A closing verse describes the merit of reciting it.

शिवपञ्चाक्षर स्तोत्र 'नमः शिवाय' मंत्र के पाँच अक्षरों न, म, शि, वा, य पर आधारित छोटी संस्कृत स्तुति है। इसके पाँचों श्लोक शिव के नामों और स्वरूप का वर्णन करके उन्हें एक-एक अक्षर के रूप में नमस्कार करते हैं। अंतिम श्लोक इसके पाठ का फल बताता है।

When to recite · कब पढ़ें

Devotees traditionally recite it during Shiva worship and abhishek, on Mondays, during the month of Sawan and on Maha Shivratri. Being short, it is also part of many families' daily prayers.

परंपरा के अनुसार भक्त इसे शिव पूजा और अभिषेक के समय, सोमवार को, सावन मास में और महाशिवरात्रि पर पढ़ते हैं। छोटा होने के कारण यह कई परिवारों की रोज़ की प्रार्थना का भी हिस्सा है।

How to recite · कैसे पढ़ें

Recite it before a Shivling or an image of Shiva, slowly, letting each verse end on 'tasmai ... karaya namah shivaya'. Many devotees follow it with the mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya'.

शिवलिंग या शिव जी के चित्र के सामने धीरे-धीरे पाठ करें, हर श्लोक 'तस्मै ...काराय नमः शिवाय' पर पूरा करें। कई भक्त इसके बाद 'ॐ नमः शिवाय' मंत्र का जप करते हैं।

Questions people ask

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

What does 'Panchakshar' mean?'पंचाक्षर' का क्या अर्थ है?

Panchakshar means 'five syllables' and refers to the mantra 'Namah Shivaya' (na-mah shi-va-ya). Each verse of the stotram ends by saluting Shiva as one of these syllables, in order.

पंचाक्षर का अर्थ है 'पाँच अक्षर', यानी 'नमः शिवाय' मंत्र (न-मः शि-वा-य)। स्तोत्र का हर श्लोक क्रम से इन्हीं में से एक अक्षर के रूप में शिव को नमस्कार करता है।

Who wrote the Shiv Panchakshar Stotram?शिव पंचाक्षर स्तोत्र किसने लिखा?

It is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, and printed editions close with his name. Scholars have not settled the authorship of many hymns credited to him, so the attribution is traditional.

परंपरा से यह आदि शंकराचार्य की रचना मानी जाती है और छपे संस्करणों के अंत में उनका नाम है। उनके नाम से प्रचलित कई स्तोत्रों के रचयिता पर विद्वान एकमत नहीं हैं, इसलिए यह मान्यता पारंपरिक है।

Is it 'Yajna Swarupaya' or 'Yaksha Swarupaya'?'यज्ञस्वरूपाय' सही है या 'यक्षस्वरूपाय'?

Both readings are found. The Gita Press Shiv Stotra Ratnakar and Nitya Karma Puja Prakash, the Brihat Stotra Ratnakar, Stotra Nidhi, Sanskrit Documents and BhaktiBharat read 'Yaksha Swarupaya' (who took the form of a Yaksha, a divine being), which is used here; Green Message, Vaidika Vignanam, Webdunia and the Isha Foundation text read 'Yajna Swarupaya' (embodiment of sacrifice).

When should it be recited?इसका पाठ कब करना चाहिए?

It is traditionally recited during Shiva worship and abhishek, on Mondays, in the month of Sawan and on Maha Shivratri. It is short enough to recite every day.

परंपरा में इसका पाठ शिव पूजा और अभिषेक के समय, सोमवार को, सावन मास में और महाशिवरात्रि पर होता है। यह इतना छोटा है कि रोज़ पढ़ा जा सकता है।

We checked every line of this stotram against these sources before publishing it (checked on 16 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

Verifier (2026-09-16) added three printed witnesses: the Gita Press Shiv Stotra Ratnakar (GP, with Hindi translation; verse 5 read from the page image), the Gita Press Nitya Karma Puja Prakash (NK) and the Brihat Stotra Ratnakar, Varanasi 1975 (BS). All three have the same five verses and closing verse. Changed by the verifier: V5 'यज्ञस्वरूपाय' (GM, VG, IS, WD) -> 'यक्षस्वरूपाय जटाधराय' (SD, SN, BB verbatim; GP, NK, BS). Every printed witness reads 'यक्ष', and a Gita Press edition outranks the web copies; GP translates it 'जिन्होंने यक्षरूप धारण किया है'. The printed witnesses agree with the readings already chosen elsewhere ('मन्दाकिनीसलिल', 'मन्दारपुष्पबहुपुष्पसुपूजिताय', 'गौरीवदनाब्जवृन्द', 'वृषध्वजाय', 'पञ्चाक्षरमिदं', 'पठेच्छिवसन्निधौ', 'शिवलोकमवाप्नोति'). The writer's comparison of the websites follows. Compared across seven sources: Sanskrit Documents (SD), Green Message (GM), Vaidika Vignanam (VG), Stotra Nidhi (SN), BhaktiBharat (BB), Isha Foundation (IS) and Webdunia (WD). All have the same five verses; SD, GM, VG and BB also give the closing verse. Each pada (quarter-verse) was chosen whole as the reading of the most sources, and every pada matches at least two sources verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing; WD writes most compounds with anusvara and spaces, so it rarely matches letter for letter). Contested padas, chosen first: V2 'मन्दाकिनीसलिल' (GM, VG, SN, BB, IS) vs 'मन्दाकिनि-सलिल' (SD); 'मन्दारपुष्पबहुपुष्पसुपूजिताय' (SD, GM, BB, IS, WD) vs 'मन्दारमुख्यबहुपुष्पसुपूजिताय' (VG, SN). V3 'गौरीवदनाब्जवृन्द' (SD, GM, BB) vs 'बृन्द' (VG, SN); 'श्रीनीलकण्ठाय वृषध्वजाय' (SD, GM, SN, BB, IS) vs 'वृषभध्वजाय' (VG). V4 'मुनीन्द्रदेवार्चितशेखराय' (SD, VG, SN, BB) vs 'मूनीन्द्र' (GM, a typo). V5 'यज्ञस्वरूपाय जटाधराय' (GM, VG, IS, WD; GM and VG give 'यक्ष' as an alternative) vs 'यक्षस्वरूपाय जटाधराय' (SD, SN, BB), now resolved by the printed witnesses as above. Closing verse 'पञ्चाक्षरमिदं पुण्यं यः पठेच्छिवसन्निधौ' (VG, BB) vs 'पंचाक्षरमिदं' (SD) and 'पठेच्छिवसंनिधौ' (GM), spelling only; 'शिवलोकमवाप्नोति' (SD, VG, BB) vs 'शिवलोकमावाप्नोति' (GM, a typo). Sringeri Sharada Peetham's site was also opened but renders its text with JavaScript, so it could not be compared.
