About Karpur Gauram

Karpur Gauram is a single Sanskrit verse in praise of Shiva, commonly recited in homes and temples when the camphor aarti is waved. It salutes Shiva as white as camphor, compassion in bodily form, the essence of the world, wearing the king of serpents as a garland and dwelling in the lotus of the heart, together with Bhavani (Parvati).

When to recite ·

It is traditionally recited at the end of an aarti, while the camphor flame is offered, in the worship of Shiva and often at the close of any puja. Many also say it in morning and evening prayers.

How to recite ·

Hold the lit camphor or lamp before the image of Shiva, or fold your hands, and recite the four lines slowly and clearly.

Which version we use

Compared across the Gita Press Aarti Sangrah (GP, two scans), Green Message (GM), BhaktiBharat (BB) and Kavita Kosh (KK). All four have the same words. Each quarter-verse was chosen whole and matches at least three of the five texts verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing). (GM, BB), spelling only; the tie goes to the Gita Press text. (GP, GM, BB; one GP scan's OCR drops the anusvara, but the page image prints 'भवं') vs 'भबं भवानीसहितं नमामि' (KK). Kavita Kosh uses the eastern spelling ब for व in these words.
