Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam | Urvarukamiva bandhanan mrityor mukshiya mamritat ||

Meaning:We worship Tryambaka, the three-eyed one, who is fragrant and who makes nourishment and well-being grow. As a ripe cucumber (urvaruka) is freed from its stem, may I be freed from the bond of death, but not from immortality. Sayana's commentary reads 'death' here as both physical death and samsara, the cycle of worldly existence.

About Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is a verse of the Rigveda addressed to Tryambaka, the three-eyed one, understood in tradition as Shiva. It asks to be released from death as easily as a ripe cucumber falls from its stem, and not to be parted from immortality. Its name means 'the great mantra of the conqueror of death'.

When to recite ·

Devotees traditionally chant it as japa, often 108 times with a rudraksha mala, in the morning or evening, and especially on Mondays, during the month of Sawan and on Maha Shivratri.

How to recite ·

Sit calmly facing an image of Shiva or a Shivling and chant the mantra slowly and clearly, keeping count on a mala if you wish. Many devotees begin with 'Om', as printed here; the Rigveda text itself starts from 'Tryambakam'.

Which version we use

The Rigveda text on Sanskrit Wikisource reads 'त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । , with the pada text 'मृत्योः । Green Message, BhaktiBharat and the Gita Press Nitya Karma Puja Prakash give the same words with 'ॐ' added at the start, as the mantra is usually recited, so 'ॐ' is included here; both half-lines match Green Message and BhaktiBharat verbatim, and the second half-line also matches the Rigveda text. Verifier (2026-09-16) confirmed on Wikisource the verse text, the pada text, the Anukramani entry (seer Maitravaruni Vasishtha; deity of verse 12 Rudra, called the 'मृत्युविमोचनी ऋक्') and Sayana's gloss of 'मृत्योः' as 'मरणात् संसाराद्वा' with the Taittiriya Samhita reference 1.8.6.2. Differences are spacing and punctuation only: BhaktiBharat's display splits 'बन्धनान् / मृत्योर्मुक्षीय' across lines and its 'मूल रूप' writes 'माऽमृतात्' with an avagraha; the Gita Press OCR reads 'त्रयम्बकं'. The Vedic accent marks shown on Wikisource are not reproduced.
