About Shiv Chalisa

The Shiv Chalisa is a Hindi hymn to Lord Shiva of forty chaupais, framed by an opening doha to Ganesh, a closing chaupai and two closing dohas. It describes Shiva's form and family, recalls his deeds, such as drinking the poison of the ocean and destroying Tripurasur, and ends with a prayer for protection and a description of how the chalisa is to be recited.

When to recite ·

Devotees traditionally recite it on Mondays, on Pradosh (Trayodashi), during the month of Sawan (Shravan) and on Maha Shivratri. Many recite it daily in the morning; the closing doha itself speaks of reciting it every morning.

How to recite ·

Sit before an image of Shiva or a Shivling, light a lamp or incense if you wish, and begin with the opening doha. Recite the forty chaupais at a steady pace and finish with the closing chaupai and dohas. Chaupais 37 to 39 describe the traditional way to recite it.

We checked every line of this chalisa against these sources before publishing it (checked on 16 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

Verifier (2026-09-16) compared ten witnesses and grouped them by family: web SD (Sanskrit Documents) with VG (Vaidika Vignanam), which follows it; DP (Drik Panchang) with BB (BhaktiBharat); WD (Webdunia); and print NK (Naval Kishore Press 'Shiv Stuti Chalisa', the oldest print found) with TK (Tej Kumar Book Depot, same text); RC (Randhir Prakashan 51 Chalisa Sangrah); RS (Randhir Book Sales booklet) with PE (Pehowa temple booklet, 2007). NK, RC, RS and PE were read from page images where it mattered. The Gita Press 'Shri Shiv Chalisa' booklets (GP 0228 and 1185) are a different hymn ('जय शिव शंकर औढरदानी'), so there is no Gita Press text of this chalisa. Every half-line matches at least one witness verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing). Word-level differences go to the majority of families; a tie goes to the printed side; spelling-only differences keep the majority web spelling. (WD, NK, RS, PE): three families each, printed side 'अब'. Ch 38 line 2 'तन नहि ताके रहे कलेशा' matched no witness once the page images were read (RC prints 'नहिं') -> 'तन नहिं ताके रहै कलेशा' (SD, VG, NK). Closing chaupai 'कहे अयोध्या आस तुम्हारी' (WD only) -> 'कहै अयोध्या आस तुम्हारी' (RC verbatim; NK 'कहै अयोध्या आश'; RS, PE 'कहत'; SD, VG, DP, BB 'कहैं अयोध्यादास', which is three beats too long for the chaupai). Dating doha 'संवत् चौसठ' (RC OCR only) -> 'मगसर छठि हेमन्त ऋतु, संवत् चौंसठ जान' (RC and RS page images; PE, NK, TK 'चौंसठ'). Kept after checking: Doha 'जय गणेश' and 'देहु अभय वरदान'. Ch 3 'मुण्डमाल तन छार लगाये' (WD, NK, RC, RS, PE) vs 'क्षार' (SD, DP). Ch 5 'बाम अंग सोहत छवि न्यारी' (DP, WD; SD, RC 'वाम') vs NK, TK, PE 'छवि भारी' (NK swaps 'भारी' and 'न्यारी' between Ch 5 and 6). सब कोई' (SD, NK) and '... सब होई' (DP, RS, PE): tie, kept. Ch 32 'शारद नारद' (SD, DP, NK) vs 'नारद शारद' (WD, RC, RS, PE): printed side split, web majority kept. Ch 33 'नमः शिवाय' (SD, DP, NK) vs 'नमो शिवाय' (WD, RC, PE): same. (RC): no whole line has a majority. Ch 38 line 1 'करै' (SD, DP, NK) vs 'करे' (WD, RC, RS). Ch 39 'धूप दीप नैवेद्य चढ़ावे' is in every witness except NK, which prints 'शंकर सन्मुख पाठ सुनावै। (SD). The dating doha is in DP, BB, WD, NK, RC, RS and PE but not SD or VG.
