About Shiv Tandav Stotram

स्तोत्र के बारे में

The Shiv Tandav Stotram is a Sanskrit hymn describing Shiva's fierce cosmic dance, the tandava: the Ganga flowing through his matted hair, the serpents around his neck, the fire on his forehead and the rhythm of his drum. Its fast, drum-like metre (panchachamara) makes it one of the most recited Shiva hymns. The common version has 15 verses, the last two describing the fruit of recitation.

When to recite · कब पढ़ें

Devotees traditionally recite it on Mondays, during the month of Sawan, on Maha Shivratri and at the evening pradosh worship; verse 15 itself mentions reciting it at the close of worship in the evening.

परंपरा के अनुसार भक्त इसे सोमवार को, सावन मास में, महाशिवरात्रि पर और संध्या के प्रदोष पूजन में पढ़ते हैं; स्वयं श्लोक 15 संध्या में पूजा के अंत में पाठ का उल्लेख करता है।

How to recite · कैसे पढ़ें

Sit before an image of Shiva or a Shivling and recite at a steady rhythm; in verses 1 to 14 each line has sixteen syllables alternating short and long, which gives the hymn its beat. The compounds are long, so learning two lines at a time helps.

शिव जी के चित्र या शिवलिंग के सामने बैठकर स्थिर लय में पाठ करें; श्लोक 1 से 14 की हर पंक्ति में सोलह अक्षर हैं जो लघु-गुरु क्रम में चलते हैं, इसी से इसकी ताल बनती है। समास लंबे हैं, इसलिए दो-दो पंक्तियाँ करके सीखना आसान रहता है।

Which version we use

Verifier (2026-09-16) added the Gita Press Shiv Stotra Ratnakar (GP, read from the page images), which has the same 15 verses in the same order and closes 'इति श्रीरावणकृतं शिवताण्डवस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम्'. Its Hindi translation was used to check the meanings. Changed by the verifier, each a tie among the websites broken by GP: V8 'जगद्धुरंधरः' (SD, GM, BB) -> 'जगद्धुरन्धरः' (VG, GP; DP 'धुरंधरः'); V11 'धिमिद्धिमिद्धिमिध्वनन्' (GM, VG, BB) -> 'धिमिद्धिमिद्धिमिद्ध्वनन्मृदङ्गतुङ्गमङ्गल' (SD, DP, GP; the regular sandhi of 'धिमित्' + 'ध्वनन्'); V13 'मंत्रमुच्चरन्' (SD, BB) -> 'शिवेति मन्त्रमुच्चरन् कदा सुखी भवाम्यहम्' (GM, DP, GP). GP also supports the readings already chosen in V1, V4 ('जटाभुजङ्ग'), V7, V9, V10 ('अखर्व'), V12 ('दृषद्', 'समप्रवृत्तिकः') and V13 ('विलोललोललोचनो'); it differs, and is not followed, in V2 'मूर्द्धनि' (with SD, against GM, VG, BB, DP), V14 'सन्ततम्' (with VG, against SD, GM, BB, DP), and in splitting V8 and V12 at 'स्फुर-/त्कुहू' and 'स्रजो-/र्गरिष्ठ', which does not change the words. The notes below are the writer's comparison of the five websites; where they name V8 'जगद्धुरंधरः', V11 or V13 'मंत्र', the verifier's choice above replaces them. Verse count: Sanskrit Documents (SD), Green Message (GM), Vaidika Vignanam (VG) and Drik Panchang (DP) give 15 verses, the version recited most widely, and that is what this page follows. BhaktiBharat (BB) inserts two more verses before the closing pair ('निलिम्पनाथनागरीकदम्बमौलमल्लिका...' and 'प्रचण्डवाडवानलप्रभाशुभप्रचारणी...') for 17; SD lists these two as optional and mentions versions of 17 to 19 verses. Readings: each pada (quarter-verse) was chosen whole, as the reading found on the most of the five sites, ties going to SD; every pada matches at least two of the five sites verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing). Contested padas, chosen first: V1 'गलेऽवलम्ब्य' (SD, GM, BB, DP) vs 'गलेवलम्ब्य' (VG). V2 'मूर्धनि' (GM, VG, BB, DP) vs 'मूर्द्धनि' (SD); 'धगज्ज्वलल्' (SD, VG, BB, DP) vs 'धगज्जलल्' (GM). V3 'नन्दिनी' (GM, VG, DP) vs 'नंदिनी' (SD, BB); 'क्वचिद्दिगम्बरे' in all (SD and BB add 'क्वचिच्चिदम्बरे' in brackets).
