About Lingashtakam

The Lingashtakam is a Sanskrit hymn of eight verses in praise of the Shivalinga, the sacred emblem of Shiva. Every verse lists the Linga's glories, how it is worshipped with sandalwood, flowers and devotion, and what it destroys, and ends with 'Tat pranamami Sadashiva Lingam': to that Linga of Sadashiva I bow. A closing verse describes the merit of reciting it.

When to recite ·

Devotees traditionally recite it while offering water, milk or bilva leaves to a Shivling, on Mondays, in the month of Sawan and on Maha Shivratri.

How to recite ·

Recite the three lines of each verse and close it with the refrain 'Tat pranamami Sadashiva Lingam'. The refrain is printed once, after verse 1, but belongs at the end of every verse. Finish with the closing verse.

We checked every line of this stotram against these sources before publishing it (checked on 16 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

Verifier (2026-09-16) added three printed witnesses: the Gita Press Shiv Stotra Ratnakar (GP, with Hindi translation, read from the page images), the Brihat Stotra Ratnakar, Varanasi 1975 (BS) and the Nirnaya Sagar Brihat Stotra Ratnakar, 1899 (NS, OCR only, used for verse count). All have the same eight verses and closing verse. Changed by the verifier: V7 'अष्टदरिद्रविनाशनलिङ्गं' (VG only, and SD 'विनाशनलिङ्गम्') -> 'अष्टदरिद्रविनाशितलिङ्गं' (GM, BB and GP verbatim; BS 'विनाशित'; SD lists it as its alternative): both printed editions read 'विनाशित'. (GP verbatim; BS the same; VG 'पठेश्शिव'): the joined form is the regular sandhi and is printed by both books, as in the Shiv Panchakshar Stotram's closing verse. GP agrees with the readings already chosen elsewhere ('सर्वसुगन्धिसुलेपित', 'कामदहं', 'परात्परं परमात्मक'). Compared across Sanskrit Documents (SD), Green Message (GM), Vaidika Vignanam (VG) and BhaktiBharat (BB); BB's text is identical to GM's letter for letter. All four have the same eight verses and closing verse. Each pada (quarter-verse) was chosen whole as the reading of the most sources, and every pada matches at least one source verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing). SD writes every pada-end as 'लिङ्गम्'; GM, VG and BB write 'लिङ्गं' inside a line and 'लिङ्गम्' at the half-verse, which is followed here. The repeated last line 'तत् प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम्' is shown once as a refrain. Contested padas, chosen first: V2 'कामदहं करुणाकरलिङ्गम्' (GM, BB; SD 'कामदहम्') vs 'कामदहन करुणाकरलिङ्गम्' (VG). V3 'सर्वसुगन्धिसुलेपितलिङ्गं' (GM, BB; SD with 'लिङ्गम्') vs 'सर्वसुगन्धसुलेपित' (VG). V8 'परात्परं परमात्मकलिङ्गं' in all (VG adds 'परमपदं' in brackets as an alternative). SD adds 'निर्मलभाषित' in brackets as an alternative to 'निर्मलभासित' in V1.
