Who wrote it
Traditionally attributed to Budha Kaushika (Ram Raksha Stotra 33)Printed as verse 33 of the Shri Ram Raksha Stotra. The stotra names Budha Kaushika as its rishi, says he wrote it down in the morning as Shiva had taught it to him in a dream, and its closing colophon calls it his composition. This authorship rests on the stotra's own tradition and is not historically established. The verse is also recited on its own and printed among prayers to Hanuman.

It is verse 33 of the Shri Ram Raksha Stotra, a Sanskrit hymn to Ram that names Budha Kaushika as its composer by tradition. Gita Press also prints it in its Hanuman Chalisa booklet among the hymns to Hanuman.

Both endings are in use. The Ram Raksha Stotra and the Gita Press booklet read 'Shri Rama dutam sharanam prapadye' (I take refuge), which is used here. Some collections end the line 'Shri Rama dutam shirasa namami' (I bow my head).

We checked every line of this shlok against these sources before publishing it (checked on 17 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

Both lines match the Sanskrit Documents text of the Ram Raksha Stotra (verse 33) and the Gita Press booklet 227, page 24 (Shri Hanumat-Stavan, read from the page image) verbatim, ignoring punctuation and spacing. Green Message has the same verse but prints 'वरिष्ठ' without the final 'म्'; its second line is identical. (Sanskrit Documents, Shri Ramadutam Shirasa Namami, where the verse is the third of a Hanuman hymn) and 'वातात्मजं वानरयूथ मुख्यम् । (Vaidika Vignanam, in the dhyana verses before its Hanuman Chalisa). The 'शरणं प्रपद्ये' ending of the Ram Raksha Stotra and Gita Press is used here. Attribution: a person with a work, like 'Maharshi Vyasa (Bhagavad Gita 2.47)', so kind is 'person' with confidence 'traditional', not a scripture reference.
