About Bajrang Baan

Bajrang Baan, 'the arrow of Bajrangbali', is a fervent prayer to Hanuman in the form of an urgent call for help. It recalls his deeds in Lanka, invokes him with mantra syllables and appeals to him by the oath of Ram to come quickly and protect the devotee. It is recited alongside the Hanuman Chalisa in many homes.

When to recite ·

Devotees traditionally recite it on Tuesdays and Saturdays, on Hanuman Jayanti, and in times of fear or difficulty. Many recite it after the Hanuman Chalisa.

How to recite ·

Traditionally it is read after bathing, seated before an image of Hanuman, often with a lamp or incense (dhoop), with a calm and respectful mind. Because the prayer calls on Hanuman by the oath of Ram, many families treat it with extra seriousness and recite it with full attention.

Who wrote it
Traditionally attributed to Goswami TulsidasTraditionally attributed to Goswami Tulsidas (16th century). The Khemraj Shrikrishnadas printed edition ends 'iti Shri Gosain Tulsidas ju krit', and Bharatkosh and Kavita Kosh list it under his name. It is not among the twelve works his biographers most securely assign to him, nor among the few other works most often credited to him, such as the Hanuman Chalisa, so the attribution rests on tradition and is not settled.

Questions people ask

Who wrote the Bajrang Baan?

It is traditionally credited to Goswami Tulsidas, and the Khemraj Shrikrishnadas printed edition names him at the end. It is not among the works biographers most securely assign to Tulsidas, so the attribution rests on tradition and is not settled.

What is the difference between the Hanuman Chalisa and the Bajrang Baan?

The Hanuman Chalisa is a calm hymn of praise in forty chaupais. The Bajrang Baan is a shorter, urgent plea that calls Hanuman to act at once, uses mantra syllables such as 'hreem' and 'hum', and appeals to him by the oath of Ram.

On which day should Bajrang Baan be recited?

Tuesday and Saturday are traditionally dedicated to Hanuman, so many devotees recite it on those days and on Hanuman Jayanti. Others recite it daily, or when they feel afraid or troubled.

Why do different books print different versions of Bajrang Baan?

Two versions are common. One (printed in older editions such as Khemraj's and on Bharatkosh) has 35 chaupais and ends 'Prem pratitahi kapi bhajai'. The other has 32 chaupais in a slightly different order and ends 'Ur pratiti dridh saran hvai'. Some sites also add a long extra section. This page follows the first version and lists the differences in the variant note.

We checked every line of this stotram against these sources before publishing it (checked on 17 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

Witnesses: four printed booklets read from their page images, Khemraj Shrikrishnadas (KH), Narayan and Co, Patna (PT), Chitrakoot Prakashan (CP) and a Sankatmochan-Bajrang Baan booklet in the Aarti Chalisa Sangrah scan (AC); and six web texts, Bharatkosh, Webdunia, Sanskrit Documents, Vaidika Vignanam, Kavita Kosh and Vedadhara. All four printed booklets have the same text shape: opening doha, the 35 chaupais in the order given here, and the closing doha on 'प्रेम प्रतीति'. A second shape circulates on the web, ending with the doha 'उर प्रतीति दृढ़, सरन ह्वै, पाठ करै धरि ध्यान' (Sanskrit Documents, Vaidika Vignanam, Kavita Kosh), and Sanskrit Documents, Webdunia and Vaidika Vignanam also add a passage beginning 'ताते विनती करौं पुकारी'; no printed booklet has either, so they are left out. Every half-line matches at least one witness verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing), and all but one (ch. 14, line 1) match a printed booklet verbatim. Printed booklets outrank the web texts, so where the draft followed a web reading against the printed majority it was changed: ch. 2 'जन के काज विलम्ब न कीजै' (CP); ch. 3 'सिन्धु महि पारा' (PT, CP, AC; KH 'सिंधु वहि पारा'); ch. 6 'सिन्धु महँ बोरा' (PT, CP); ch. 9 'अब विलम्ब केहि कारन स्वामी' (CP, AC) and 'उर अन्तर्यामी' (PT, CP, AC; KH 'अंतरजामी'); ch. 10 'आतुर होइ' (KH, CP; PT 'होई', AC 'होय दुःख हरहु'); ch. 11 'जय गिरिधर जय जय सुखसागर' (KH, CP); ch. 12 'बैरिहिं मारु बज्र की कीले' (CP); ch. 14 'ॐकार हुंकार महाप्रभु धावो' (Sanskrit Documents, Vaidika Vignanam; PT 'हुँकार महाप्रभु', CP 'ओंकार हुंकार महाप्रभु'; KH 'महावीर'; AC, Bharatkosh, Vedadhara 'प्रभु') and 'विलम्ब न लावो' (PT, AC); ch. 15 'कपीशा' (KH) and 'ॐ हुँ हुँ हुँ हनु अरि उर शीशा' (PT, CP); ch. 16 'सत्य होहु हरि शपथ पाय के' (AC, PT; KH 'हरि सत्य पायकै'); ch. 21 'शंकरसुवन वीर हनुमंता' (KH; all four prints 'वीर'); ch. 23 'अग्नि बैताल काल मारी मर' (PT, AC; KH 'वैताल'); ch. 24 'इन्हें मारु तोहि शपथ राम की' (AC, KH); ch. 25 'कहावो' (all four prints) and 'ताकी शपथ विलम्ब न लावो' (PT, AC); ch. 28 'राम दोहाई' (KH, PT, CP; AC and all web 'दुहाई') and 'पाँय परौं' (PT, CP, AC); ch. 30 'हाँक' (CP); ch. 31 'उबारो', 'हमारो' (all four prints); ch. 33 'हनुमत रक्षा करैं प्राण की' (CP, AC; KH 'करै प्रानकी'); ch. 34 'काँपै' (PT, CP, AC). Kept where the prints are split: ch. 1 'सुन लीजै' (CP, AC) against 'सुनि लीजै' (KH, PT); ch. 10 'लक्ष्मण' (CP, AC) against 'लखन' (PT); ch. 16 'धाइ कै' (KH; AC 'धाय के') against 'जायके' (PT, CP); ch. 27 'चरण शरण' (CP, AC) against 'शरण शरण' (KH, PT); opening doha 'विनय करें सनमान' (AC) against 'करैं' (CP) and 'करै' (KH); closing doha 'प्रेम प्रतीतहि कपि भजै' (AC, Vedadhara) against 'प्रतीतिहि' (PT, CP) and 'प्रतीति धारि' (KH). Because each line is copied whole from one witness, a few spellings differ between lines (for example 'हुंकार' in ch. 14 but 'हुँ' in ch. 15).
