About Hanuman Chalisa

चालीसा के बारे में

The Hanuman Chalisa is a hymn of forty chaupais to Hanuman, written by Goswami Tulsidas in Awadhi, framed by two opening dohas and one closing doha. It praises Hanuman's strength, wisdom and devotion to Ram and recalls his deeds from the Ramayana. It is one of the most widely recited Hindu prayers.

हनुमान चालीसा गोस्वामी तुलसीदास द्वारा अवधी में रची गई हनुमान जी की स्तुति है, जिसमें आरंभ के दो दोहे, चालीस चौपाइयाँ और अंत में एक दोहा है। इसमें हनुमान जी के बल, बुद्धि और राम-भक्ति का गुणगान तथा रामायण में उनके कार्यों का स्मरण है। यह सबसे अधिक पढ़ी जाने वाली प्रार्थनाओं में से एक है।

When to recite · कब पढ़ें

Devotees traditionally recite it on Tuesdays and Saturdays, on Hanuman Jayanti, and in the morning or evening after bathing. Many households recite it every day. There is no fixed rule about the time.

परंपरा के अनुसार भक्त इसे मंगलवार और शनिवार को, हनुमान जयंती पर, और सुबह या शाम स्नान के बाद पढ़ते हैं। कई घरों में इसका रोज़ पाठ होता है। समय को लेकर कोई कठोर नियम नहीं है।

How to recite · कैसे पढ़ें

Sit before an image of Hanuman or of Ram, light a lamp if you wish, and begin with the two opening dohas. Recite the forty chaupais at a steady pace and finish with the closing doha. Many devotees end with the call 'Siyavar Ramchandra ki jai, Pavansut Hanuman ki jai'.

हनुमान जी या श्रीराम के चित्र के सामने बैठें, चाहें तो दीपक जलाएँ, और आरंभ के दो दोहों से शुरू करें। चालीस चौपाइयाँ स्थिर गति से पढ़ें और अंतिम दोहे से समापन करें। कई भक्त अंत में 'सियावर रामचंद्र की जय, पवनसुत हनुमान की जय' बोलते हैं।

Who wrote it
By Goswami TulsidasGoswami Tulsidas (16th century), the poet-saint who also wrote the Ramcharitmanas. He names himself in chaupai 40, and Gita Press and scholars generally accept him as the author. The Chalisa is not among the twelve works his biographers most securely assign to him, and a few writers doubt it, but the attribution to Tulsidas is the accepted view.

How many verses are there in the Hanuman Chalisa?हनुमान चालीसा में कितनी चौपाइयाँ हैं?

Forty chaupais, which give it the name chalisa (from chalis, forty). They are framed by two dohas at the start and one doha at the end, so 43 verses in all.

चालीस चौपाइयाँ, इसी से इसका नाम चालीसा पड़ा। आरंभ में दो दोहे और अंत में एक दोहा है, यानी कुल 43 छंद।

On which day should I read the Hanuman Chalisa?हनुमान चालीसा किस दिन पढ़नी चाहिए?

Tuesday and Saturday are traditionally dedicated to Hanuman, and many devotees read it on those days and on Hanuman Jayanti. Many others read it every day. You can read it at any time with a calm mind.

How many times should the Hanuman Chalisa be recited?हनुमान चालीसा कितनी बार पढ़नी चाहिए?

There is no fixed number. One reading is a complete recitation. Some devotees keep a personal vow of 7, 11 or 108 readings, and chaupai 38 speaks of reciting it a hundred times. The tradition values devotion over the count.

स्रोत

We checked every line of this chalisa against these sources before publishing it (checked on 17 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

The text follows three Gita Press Gorakhpur editions, all read from their page images: the Shri Hanuman Chalisa booklet (book code 227, 2000 printing), Nitya Karma Puja Prakash (book code 592, 2013 reprint) and the Hanuman Chalisa with Hindi bhavarth (book code 1094, 2023 reprint). They agree on the wording of every line and differ only in spelling. Every half-line printed here matches at least one of them verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing); all but one match the 227 booklet. Chaupai 8: 227 and Nitya Karma Puja Prakash print 'राम लषन', 1094 prints 'राम लखन'. The two are the same word, pronounced 'Lakhan' (older Awadhi spelling writes the kh sound with ष). We print 'लखन', the reading of 1094, of Rambhadracharya's critical text and of every web witness, and the spelling all three editions use for the same name in chaupai 11 and the closing doha; a modern reader would otherwise say 'Lashan'. Chaupai 10 'रामचंद्र' (227, Nitya Karma Puja Prakash) / 'रामचन्द्र' (1094) and chaupai 17 'मंत्र' (227) / 'मन्त्र' (1094, Nitya Karma Puja Prakash) are spelling only; we follow 227. The web witnesses are Sanskrit Documents, Webdunia, Bharatkosh, Green Message, Vaidika Vignanam, Kavita Kosh and Jagadguru Rambhadracharya's Mahaviri text. Readings decided deliberately: Doha 1 'श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज' (all three Gita Press, Sanskrit Documents, Webdunia; Bharatkosh, Green Message, Vignanam 'चरण'); 'निज मनु मुकुरु' (Gita Press, Sanskrit Documents, Webdunia, Bharatkosh) against 'निज मन मुकुर' (Vignanam, Rambhadracharya); 'बरनउँ' (all three Gita Press, Rambhadracharya) against 'बरनऊँ' (Sanskrit Documents, Bharatkosh). Doha 2 'बल बुधि बिद्या' (all three Gita Press, Rambhadracharya) against 'बुद्धि' (the other web texts). Chaupai 3 'कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी': no witness differs in wording. Chaupai 4 'कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा' (Gita Press, Sanskrit Documents, Webdunia, Kavita Kosh) against Sanskritised 'कंचन वरण विराज सुवेशा' (Vignanam). Chaupai 6 'संकर सुवन केसरीनंदन' (all three Gita Press, Sanskrit Documents, Webdunia) against 'शंकर सुवन' (Bharatkosh, Green Message, Vignanam, Kavita Kosh) and 'शंकर स्वयं केशरीनन्दन' (Rambhadracharya's critical reading, also noted in brackets by Vignanam). Chaupai 7 'बिद्यावान' (all three Gita Press) against 'विद्यावान' (all web texts). Chaupai 11 'सजीवन' (Gita Press, Sanskrit Documents, Webdunia, Bharatkosh, Green Message) against 'संजीवन' (Vignanam, Kavita Kosh). Chaupai 15 'जम कुबेर' (Gita Press and most web texts) against 'यम कुबेर' (Green Message, Vignanam). Chaupai 17 'तुम्हरो मंत्र बिभीषन माना' (227, Sanskrit Documents, Webdunia) against 'विभीषन/विभीषण' (Bharatkosh, Kavita Kosh, Green Message, Vignanam). Chaupai 27 'सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा' against 'सब पर राम राय सिरताजा' (Rambhadracharya). Chaupai 28 'जो कोइ लावै' (all three Gita Press, Green Message) against 'कोई' (the other web texts); 'सोइ अमित' against 'तासु अमित' (Vignanam, Rambhadracharya).
