The muhurat is the part of pradosh kaal (sunset plus one fifth of the night) when the Vrishabha lagna rises, while Amavasya lasts. Dates and times are for each city's own clock, worked out for the city centre. A suburb can differ by a few minutes; your local temple's calendar is the final word.
About Diwali
Diwali, on Kartik Amavasya, is the festival of lights. Families clean and light up their homes, worship Goddess Lakshmi with Lord Ganesh in the evening, and share sweets. It is the third of the five days that begin with Dhanteras and end with Bhai Dooj.
What to do on Diwali
- Clean the home, decorate the entrance and make a rangoli.
- Set up the puja on a red cloth with idols or pictures of Lakshmi and Ganesh, a kalash, rice, flowers, sweets and coins.
- In the muhurat, worship Ganesh first, then Goddess Lakshmi, with a lamp, roli, rice and flowers.
- Sing the Lakshmi and Ganesh aarti, and offer the sweets as prasad.
- Light diyas around the home and keep a lamp burning at the puja place through the night, as many families do.
Customs differ between families and regions. Follow your own family or temple where they differ.
