Meaning:The chalisa says such a person is not troubled by illness and gains children, wealth and property. It goes on to speak of anyone who has no son or no wealth, or who is blind, deaf, suffering from leprosy or in deep need. These lines state the traditional merit (phala) of recitation as an expression of faith; they are not medical advice.

Devotees traditionally recite it on Fridays, on Diwali and during Lakshmi puja, and many read it daily in the evening. The chalisa itself speaks of reciting it daily and of a forty-day recitation.

Who wrote Lakshmi Chalisa?

The author is not known. The closing doha mentions 'Ramdas', which some read as the poet's name, but there is no reliable record of who he was.

What does 'Sindhu suta main sumiraun tohi' mean?'

Sindhu suta means daughter of the ocean, a name for Lakshmi because she rose from the ocean of milk. The line means: 'O daughter of the ocean, I remember you.'

Why do different books have slightly different Lakshmi Chalisa words?

The chalisa has come down through many small printed booklets and websites, so some words differ, and some versions add an extra opening doha or a line naming Ramdas. We compared several printed and online versions and give the reading most of them share.

We checked every line of this chalisa against these sources before publishing it (checked on 16 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

No Gita Press edition of this chalisa was found, so it rests on four witnesses: the printed book 51 Chalisa Sangrah, Randhir Prakashan (RP, read from the page images); Drik Panchang (DP); an indif.com printout bound into the scanned 'Aarti Chalisa Sangrah' (IN, read from the page images; it shares DP's slips such as 'दर्शन दजै', so DP and IN are not fully independent); and one web text that Sanskrit Documents, Webdunia and Bharatkosh copy almost word for word (W). Every half-line below appears word for word in at least one witness. We chose whole half-lines by how many witnesses carry them; where all four differ, the 16-matra chaupai metre decided. Structure: DP, RP and IN have 39 chaupais; W adds an opening doha 'सिंधु सुता विष्णुप्रिये नत शिर बारंबार...' and a fortieth chaupai 'रामदास अब कहै पुकारी। , both left out. RP moves 'केहि प्रकार मैं करौं बड़ाई' earlier; we keep it last with DP, IN and W. Choices: 'जय जननि जगदंबिका' (RP, W) over DP's 'जगदम्बिका'; 'सिन्धु सुता मैं सुमिरौं तोही' (W, IN) over 'सुमिरौ' (DP) and 'सुमिरों' (RP); 'ज्ञान बुद्धि विद्या दो मोही' (DP, IN) over 'दो मोहि' (W) and 'दे मोही' (RP); 'जै जै जगत जननि जगदम्बा' (W, IN) over 'जय जय जगत' (DP) and 'जय जय जय जननी' (RP); 'सबकी तुम ही हो अवलम्बा' (DP, RP, IN) over W's 'सबके तुमही हो स्वलम्बा'; 'तुम ही हो सब घट घट वासी' (DP, IN) over 'तुम हो सब घट घट के वासी' (RP) and 'तुम ही हो घट घट के वासी' (W); 'कृपा करौ जग जननि भवानी' (DP, W); 'जगजननी विनती सुन मोरी' (DP, RP, IN) over W's 'जगत जननि'; 'ज्ञान बुद्धि जय सुख की दाता' (DP, IN, W) over RP's 'सब सुख का'; 'सेवा कियो प्रभु बनि दासी' (DP, IN) over 'प्रभु बन' (RP) and 'प्रभुहिं बनि' (W); 'जब जब जन्म जहां प्रभु लीन्हा' (DP, IN, W) over RP's 'जो जो जन्म प्रभु जहां लीना'; 'रूप बदल तहं सेवा कीन्हा' (W) over 'रुप...तहं' (DP, IN) and 'तहँ' (RP); 'तब तुम प्रगट' (DP, RP, IN) over W's 'प्रकट'; 'अपनायो तोहि अन्तर्यामी' (RP, W) over 'अपनाया' (DP, IN), matching the old verb forms कियो and मथायो; 'विश्व विदित त्रिभुवन की स्वामी' (DP, IN, W) over RP's 'के स्वामी'; 'तुम सम प्रबल शक्ति नहीं आनी' (DP, IN) over 'नहिं आनि' (RP) and W's 'तुम सब'; 'कहँ लौं महिमा कहौं बखानी' (RP; DP has the same reading as 'कहं लौ') over 'कहँ तक' (IN) and 'कहं तक' (W); 'मन क्रम वचन करै सेवकाई' (DP, RP, W) over IN's 'मन कर्म'; 'जो यह पाठ करै मन लाई' (DP, RP, IN) over W's 'करे'; 'मन इच्छित पावै फल सोई' (DP, RP, IN); 'त्राहि त्राहि जय दुःख निवारिणी' (W) and 'त्रिविध ताप भव बंधन हारिणी' (IN) over RP, which drops 'त्रिविध'; 'जो चालीसा पढ़ै पढ़ावै' (DP) over 'जो यह चालीसा पढ़ै पढ़ावै' (IN), 'जो यह पढ़े और पढ़ावे' (RP) and 'जो यह चालीसा पढ़े और पढ़ावे' (W), a four-way split where only DP's line fits the metre; 'ध्यान लगाकर सुनै सुनावै' (DP, RP) over 'सुने' (IN) and W's 'इसे ध्यान'; 'ताको कोई न रोग सतावै' (W) over 'ताकौ' (DP, IN) and RP's 'सतावे'; 'पुत्रहीन अरु सम्पति हीना' (DP; RP 'संपतिहीना') over 'और' (IN, W); 'अन्ध बधिर' (DP, RP, IN) over W's 'अन्धा'; 'विप्र बोलाय कै पाठ करावै' (DP, IN, W) over RP's 'के'; 'सुख सम्पत्ति बहुत सी पावै' and 'बारह मास करै जो पूजा' (DP, IN, W) over RP's 'बहुत सो' and 'करै सो'; 'उन सम कोइ जग में कहुं नाहीं' (DP, IN) over RP's 'कोई... (DP, RP, IN) over W's 'महारानी' and 'जो'; 'तुम सम कोउ दयालु कहुं नाहिं' (DP, IN) over 'समकोउ दयालु कहुँ' (RP) and 'दयाल कहूं नाहीं' (W); 'दर्शन दीजै दशा निहारी' (RP, W) over DP and IN's slip 'दजै'; 'तुमहि अछत दुःख सहते भारी' (DP, IN) over W's 'अक्षत'; 'नहिं मोहिं ज्ञान बुद्धि है तन में' (DP, IN, W) over RP's 'मन में'. Closing doha: 'करो शत्रु को नाश' (DP, IN) over 'शत्रुन का' (W) and 'दुश्मन का' (RP); 'मातु लक्ष्मी दास पर' (DP, W) over RP's 'पै'. Obvious slips in single sources (DP 'परुवहु', 'चितववो', 'कष्ट नोई') were not followed.
