The sixteen names are found in the Kali-Santarana Upanishad. In it, Narada asks Brahma how to cross the difficulties of the Kali age, and Brahma gives him these names.

Does it start with Hare Krishna or Hare Rama?

Both orders are chanted. The Kali-Santarana Upanishad gives Hare Rama first. ISKCON and many Krishna devotees chant Hare Krishna first, which is the order shown on this page. The sixteen names are the same.

Are there any rules for chanting it?

The Kali-Santarana Upanishad itself says there is no special procedure for it and that it may be recited at all times, whether one is ritually pure or not. Many devotees still keep a fixed daily count on a mala.

Why is it called the Mahamantra?

Maha means great. Devotees call it the great mantra because it is made only of the Lord's names and can be chanted by anyone, anywhere.

We checked every line of this mantra against these sources before publishing it (checked on 16 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

The words never vary; only the order of the two lines does. The Kali-Santarana Upanishad reads ISKCON and Hindi Wikipedia give the Hare Krishna line first. We show the Hare Krishna first order because this page is for the chant as it is most widely known by that name, and we state the Upanishad's order in the FAQ. Attribution is marked unknown because the mantra has no individual author; the label names the scripture where it appears.
