About Saraswati Vandana

Saraswati Vandana is a Sanskrit prayer to Saraswati, goddess of knowledge, music and speech. The first shloka, 'Ya Kundendu Tushara Hara Dhavala', describes her white form, veena and lotus seat and asks her to remove ignorance; the second, 'Shuklam Brahmavichara', bows to her as the giver of understanding. It is sung in schools and at Vasant Panchami.

When to recite ·

Traditionally it is recited on Vasant Panchami (Saraswati Puja), at school assemblies, before studies, exams, music practice or any creative work, and in daily morning prayers.

How to recite ·

Sit calmly, facing an image of Saraswati or simply with folded hands, and recite or sing the two shlokas slowly.

Who wrote it
Traditional Sanskrit prayerTraditional Sanskrit verses of prayer to Saraswati. Both appear inside longer Saraswati stotras and are also recited on their own. Gita Press prints them in a Shri Saraswati Stotram that names no author, and in the Siddha Saraswati Stotram, whose viniyoga names Markandeya as its rishi (the seer of the mantra, not a named author). A South Indian Saraswati Stotram that opens with 'Ya Kundendu' calls itself the words of sage Agastya. No author is established.

Which version we use

This page gives two shlokas: 'Ya Kundendu Tushara Hara Dhavala' (the verse most people know as Saraswati Vandana) and 'Shuklam Brahmavichara Sara', which follows it as a pair in the Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Sansthan 'Stuti Mani Mala', the Saraswati Shishu Mandir booklet, Webdunia, Bharatkosh and Vidya Bharati. Every half-line matches at least one listed source verbatim (ignoring punctuation and spacing), and printed books were read from page images. Shloka 1 lines 1, 2 and 4 match Gita Press (Nitya Karma Puja Prakash; Devi Stotra Ratnakar, twice) and Stuti Mani Mala; English Wikipedia and Green Message write 'सरस्वति', Bharatkosh 'माँ', Vignanam 'निश्शेष' with anusvara spellings. Line 3 reads 'सदा वन्दिता' in all three Gita Press texts, Stuti Mani Mala, Webdunia, Bharatkosh and Vidya Bharati; 'सदा पूजिता' is the reading of the South Indian Saraswati Stotram (Green Message, English Wikipedia, Vignanam 'देवैस्सदा पूजिता', Drik Panchang) and of Sanskrit Documents. The Gita Press spelling 'ब्रह्माच्युतशङ्कर' is used. Shloka 2: line 1 'शुक्लां' (both Gita Press texts, Stuti Mani Mala, Webdunia, Bharatkosh, Vidya Bharati) vs 'शुद्धां' (Sanskrit Documents). Line 3 'हस्ते स्फाटिकमालिकां विदधतीं पद्मासने संस्थितां' matches Gita Press Devi Stotra Ratnakar (Siddha Saraswati Stotram), Stuti Mani Mala and Vidya Bharati; the Saraswati Shishu Mandir booklet and Webdunia end 'संस्थिताम्', Gita Press's Shri Saraswati Stotram reads 'च दधतीं', Bharatkosh 'स्फटिक' and Sanskrit Documents 'स्पाटिक'. The Hindi meaning on Webdunia and Bharatkosh follows the Saraswati Shishu Mandir booklet closely, so those pages are not counted as independent of it. Other verses of the longer stotras, such as 'दोर्भिर्युक्ता चतुर्भिः' (Vignanam, Green Message, Sanskrit Documents), are not included.
