About Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu

श्लोक के बारे में

Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu is a two-line Sanskrit verse of reverence for the guru, the teacher who removes ignorance. It honours the guru as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and as the supreme reality itself. It is widely recited, especially on Guru Purnima and at the start of lessons.

When to recite · कब पढ़ें

Traditionally it is recited on Guru Purnima, at the start of a class, a music or dance lesson or a study session, when touching a teacher's feet, and in daily morning prayers.

परंपरा के अनुसार इसे गुरु पूर्णिमा पर, कक्षा, संगीत या नृत्य की शिक्षा या पढ़ाई की शुरुआत में, गुरु के चरण छूते समय, और रोज़ सुबह की प्रार्थना में बोला जाता है।

How to recite · कैसे पढ़ें

Fold your hands and bow, thinking of your teacher or guru, and say both lines slowly. It is usually said once, at the start of learning or worship.

हाथ जोड़कर अपने शिक्षक या गुरु का स्मरण करते हुए झुकें और दोनों पंक्तियाँ धीरे बोलें। प्रायः इसे सीखने या पूजा की शुरुआत में एक बार बोला जाता है।

Who wrote it
From Guru Gita (variant reading)Commonly cited from the Guru Gita, a dialogue between Shiva and Parvati that its own colophon places in the Skanda Purana; that attribution is traditional, and no individual author is named. In the Guru Gita texts checked (printed and online), the second line reads 'Gurureva param Brahma'. The widely recited 'Guruh sakshat Parabrahma', used here, is how Gita Press prints the verse in its Bhajan Sudha and in Kalyan.

Questions people ask

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

What is the meaning of Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu?गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः का क्या अर्थ है?

The guru is Brahma, the guru is Vishnu, the guru is Lord Maheshvara (Shiva); the guru is the supreme reality itself. Salutations to that revered guru. It honours the teacher who gives true knowledge as divine.

गुरु ब्रह्मा हैं, गुरु विष्णु हैं, गुरु ही देव महेश्वर (शिव) हैं; गुरु साक्षात् परब्रह्म हैं। ऐसे श्री गुरु को नमस्कार। यह सच्चा ज्ञान देने वाले गुरु को ईश्वर का रूप मानकर नमन करता है।

Where does the Guru Brahma shloka come from?गुरु ब्रह्मा श्लोक कहाँ से है?

It is commonly cited from the Guru Gita, a dialogue between Shiva and Parvati that is traditionally placed in the Skanda Purana. In the Guru Gita texts checked, the second line reads 'Gurureva param Brahma' (the guru alone is the supreme Brahman).

सामान्यतः इसे गुरु गीता से उद्धृत माना जाता है, जो शिव-पार्वती संवाद है और परंपरा से स्कंद पुराण में माना जाता है। देखे गए गुरु गीता पाठों में दूसरी पंक्ति 'गुरुरेव परं ब्रह्म' (गुरु ही परब्रह्म हैं) है।

Is it 'Guruh sakshat Parabrahma' or 'Gurureva param Brahma'?'गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म' है या 'गुरुरेव परं ब्रह्म'?

Both are printed. 'Guruh sakshat Parabrahma' is the line most people recite, Gita Press prints it that way in its Bhajan Sudha and in Kalyan, and it is used on this page. The Guru Gita itself (for example the Datia Peeth edition, verse 25) and the Gurustotram in Ramakrishna Math's Stava Sumananjali read 'Gurureva param Brahma' (the guru alone is the supreme Brahman). The meaning is the same: the guru is the supreme reality.

When is this shloka recited?यह श्लोक कब बोला जाता है?

Especially on Guru Purnima, at the start of lessons in schools, music and dance, and whenever one pays respect to a teacher.

विशेषकर गुरु पूर्णिमा पर, विद्यालय, संगीत और नृत्य की कक्षाओं की शुरुआत में, और जब भी गुरु को प्रणाम किया जाता है।

We checked every line of this shlok against these sources before publishing it (checked on 17 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

Line 1 'गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः' matches Gita Press Bhajan Sudha page 42 (read from the page image), Shlokam.org, Sanskrit Documents (Sartha Gurvashtakam) and Dharmarth Varta Samadhan verbatim. Bhajan Sudha page 46, Kalyan 1991, Ramakrishna Math's Stava Sumananjali and both Sanskrit Documents Guru Gita texts join it with sandhi as 'गुरुर्विष्णुर्गुरुर्देवो', and Vignanam reads 'गुरुर्ब्रह्म'. Line 2 has two wordings. 'गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः' is printed by Gita Press in Bhajan Sudha page 46 and in Kalyan year 65 issue 6 (1991) page 576, and read by Vignanam, Shlokam.org and Dharmarth Varta Samadhan; Bhajan Sudha also prints 'गुरुः साक्षात्परं ब्रह्म' on another page and misprints 'गुरुर्साक्षात्' on page 42. 'गुरुरेव परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः' is the Guru Gita reading: Ramakrishna Math Stava Sumananjali (Gurustotram verse 1), Datia Peeth's Guru Gita (verse 25), Sanskrit Documents long Guru Gita (verse 58), Sanskrit Documents Sartha Gurvashtakam and Smiling Expert ('परंब्रह्म'); the Sanskrit Documents short Guru Gita (verse 32) reads 'गुरुरेव परब्रह्म'. The verse number differs between Guru Gita recensions. The 'साक्षात्' line is used because Gita Press prints it and it is the form people recite and search for; the Guru Gita reading is explained in the FAQ.
