It says: we meditate on the excellent radiance of the divine Savitr (the sun as the source of life); may he inspire our thoughts. The opening 'Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah' names the three worlds: earth, the middle region and heaven.

Who wrote the Gayatri Mantra?

It is a verse of the Rigveda (3.62.10). Vedic tradition names the rishi Vishvamitra as its seer. In the Vedic view a mantra is revealed to a rishi, not composed like a poem.

Is 'Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah' part of the Rigveda verse?

No. The Rigveda verse begins at 'Tat Savitur Varenyam'. Om and the three words Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah (the mahavyahritis) are placed before it when it is recited, a practice described in later Vedic texts.

Which version we use

The Rigveda verse (3.62.10) begins at 'Tat Savitur Varenyam'; its wording is identical in all sources checked. The first line 'Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah' is Om followed by the three mahavyahritis (earth, middle region, heaven). It is not part of the Rigveda verse but is placed before it in recitation. The verse appears with the three vyahritis in the Shukla Yajurveda (Vajasaneyi Samhita 36.3) and the Taittiriya Aranyaka describes chanting it with Om and the vyahritis. We give the prefixed form because that is how the mantra is commonly recited. People often search for it as 'Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha', but the word here is svah (heaven), not svaha; in Krishna Yajurveda recitation it is pronounced 'suvah'.
