Om Saha Navavatu | Saha Nau Bhunaktu | Saha Viryam Karavavahai | Tejasvi Navadhitamastu Ma Vidvishavahai | Om Shantih Shantih Shantih ||

Meaning:Om. May the Divine protect us both (teacher and student) together. May it nourish us both together. May we work together with energy. May what we study be radiant (tejasvi). Tradition explains the threefold 'shanti' as a prayer for peace from disturbance within oneself, from the world around and from forces beyond our control.

All sources give the same words. The differences are only in spacing and sandhi: 'सह वीर्यं' or 'सहवीर्यं' (Vaidika Vignanam 'वीर्यङ्करवावहै'), and 'तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु' or 'तेजस्विनावधीतमस्तु' (tejasvi nau adhitam astu). Some editions put 'मा विद्विषावहै' on a separate line. The popular spelling 'Om Sahana Vavatu' runs 'saha nau avatu' together; the words are saha (together), nau (us two), avatu (may he protect).
