About Navgrah Stotram

Nine Sanskrit verses, one each to the nine grahas: Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu. Each verse describes the graha's colour, parentage and nature and ends with a bow. Three closing verses (phala shruti) state the merit the tradition ascribes to reciting it.

When to recite ·

Many devotees recite it daily in the morning after bathing. It is traditionally recited during navagraha puja and nav grah shanti rituals, and when offering prayers at the navagraha shrine in a temple.

How to recite ·

Recite the nine verses in order, from Surya to Ketu, then the three closing verses. Some devotees recite the verse of a particular graha on its day of the week, for example the Surya verse on Sunday.

Tradition attributes it to the sage Vyasa. The hymn itself calls its verses 'sung from the mouth of Vyasa', and editions end with 'composed by Shri Vyasa'. There is no independent historical evidence for the attribution.

What is the meaning of 'Japakusuma Sankasham'?'

It is the opening of the Surya verse: 'glowing like the japa (hibiscus) flower'. The full verse bows to the Sun as the son of Kashyapa, the enemy of darkness and the destroyer of sins.

Many devotees recite it every morning after bathing. It is traditionally recited during navagraha puja and nav grah shanti rituals and at the navagraha shrine in temples.

Does reciting the Navagraha Stotram remove graha dosha?

The closing verses say, in the voice of tradition, that troubles from the planets become calm. Devotees recite it as a prayer to the nine grahas. We describe this as belief; we do not promise any astrological result.

Same wording in all twelve verses and the closing line 'इति श्रीव्यासविरचितं आदित्यादिनवग्रहस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम्'; writes 'सङ्काशं' but 'दधिशंख', 'संभवम्', 'संभूतं' and 'संनिभम्'. • Vaidika Vignanam: Nava Graha Stotramvignanam.org/devanagari/nava-graha-stotram.htmlSame hymn with several different readings, listed in the variant note.

Which version we use

Sanskrit Documents, Sanskrit Wikisource, Stotranidhi and the Khemraj print edition agree word for word, except that Stotranidhi (like Vaidika Vignanam) writes 'मार्ताण्ड' for 'मार्तण्ड'. Vaidika Vignanam differs in several places, and we follow the agreeing sources: it reads 'क्षीरार्णवसमुद्भवम्' (giving 'क्षीरोदार्णवसम्भवम्' in brackets), 'शम्भोर्मकुट' for 'मुकुट', 'कुजं' (with 'मङ्गलं' in brackets), 'बुद्धिमन्तं' for 'बुद्धिभूतं', 'दैत्यानं' for 'दैत्यानां', 'महावीरं' for 'महावीर्यं', 'विमर्धनम्' for 'विमर्दनम्' and 'तास्सर्वाः' for 'ताः सर्वाः'. It also adds an opening verse 'आदित्याय च सोमाय मङ्गलाय बुधाय च । that the other sources do not have, so we leave it out. The copies also spell nasals differently (सङ्काशं or संकाशं, सम्भूतं or संभूतं); we give each half-line exactly as most of the five copies print it: 'जपाकुसुमसङ्काशं', 'दधिशङ्खतुषाराभं क्षीरोदार्णवसम्भवम्' (Wikisource, Stotranidhi; the Gita Press Nitya Karma Puja Prakash prints the same half-line in its navagraha invocation), 'धरणीगर्भसम्भूतं', 'काञ्चनसन्निभम्' and 'पलाशपुष्पसङ्काशं'. In verse 7 'छायामार्तण्डसंभूतं' (Sanskrit Documents, print) and 'छायामार्ताण्डसम्भूतं' (Vignanam, Stotranidhi) are evenly split and the print edition decides; in verse 8 'सिंहिकागर्भसंभूतं' is the reading of Sanskrit Documents, Wikisource and the print edition. The pronunciation is the same either way. Sanskrit Documents and the print edition number the first closing verse as 10; Wikisource leaves the three closing verses unnumbered, as we do.
