About Shani Dev Aarti

One of the most widely sung aartis of Shani Dev, beginning 'Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari'. It praises Shani as the son of Surya and Chhaya, describes his dark form, blue garments and elephant mount, and lists the offerings devotees bring him.

When to recite ·

Devotees traditionally sing it on Saturdays, the day associated with Shani, usually in the evening after lighting a lamp. It is also sung on Shani Jayanti and on Shani Amavasya.

Questions people ask

When should the Shani Dev aarti be sung?

Devotees traditionally sing it on Saturdays, usually in the evening after lighting a lamp, and on Shani Jayanti and Shani Amavasya. It can be sung on any day as an act of devotion.

Who wrote 'Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari'?'

It is a folk aarti passed down in households and temples. None of the published versions we checked names an author.

What does 'Suraj ke putra prabhu Chhaya mahtari' mean?'

It means 'O Lord, you are the son of Surya, and Chhaya is your mother'. In the Puranic stories Shani is the son of the sun god Surya and his wife Chhaya.

Does singing the Shani aarti remove Sade Sati?

Many devotees pray to Shani Dev on Saturdays, including during Sade Sati, as an act of faith and steadiness. The aarti is a prayer of praise, not a remedy with a promised result, and we do not claim any astrological effect.

What does the aarti say is offered to Shani Dev?

Verse 3 names modak, sweets, betel leaf and areca nut as offerings, and says iron, sesame, oil and urad lentils are dear to him. These are the items devotees traditionally offer on Saturdays.

Which version we use

Two title aartis are common for Shani: 'Jai Jai Shri Shanidev Bhaktan Hitkari' (used here) and a different aarti beginning 'Jai Shani Deva'. We compared this aarti in 12 web copies and 5 printed booklets, counting copies of one site's text once: Webdunia (repeated by allbhajanlyrics), BhaktiBharat (repeated with its slips 'अंक', 'दृष्ट', 'सुमरिन' by Bhakti Bharat Ki, The Shivling, Manubhaiya, BhaktiTak and usekro), Drik Panchang (repeated by Nakshatra Vichar and Sampurn Chalisa), Bhaktvatsal, and the printed Randhir Prakashan (2004), Sumit Publication, Rama Publications (2023), an 'Aarti Collection' booklet and a Khemraj Shrikrishnadas booklet 'Shanaishchar ki Katha'. Each half-line is the reading of the most independent witnesses, printed exactly as at least one of them has it. 'सूरज के पुत्र प्रभु छाया महतारी' (BhaktiBharat, Drik Panchang, Bhaktvatsal, Sumit, Rama, Khemraj) against 'सूर्य पुत्र' (Webdunia, Randhir, Aarti Collection). Verse 2: 'राजित' / 'राजत' (Webdunia, Bhaktvatsal, Randhir, Khemraj) against 'रजित' (BhaktiBharat, Aarti Collection), 'सजत' (Sumit, Rama) and 'सहज' (Drik Panchang); the whole line 'क्रीट मुकुट शीश राजित दिपत है लिलारी' is as in Webdunia and Randhir. 'मुक्तन की माल गले' (Drik Panchang, Bhaktvatsal, Randhir, Sumit, Rama) against 'माला' (Webdunia, BhaktiBharat, Aarti Collection, Khemraj). Verses 3 and 4: 'मोदक मिष्ठान पान चढ़त हैं सुपारी', 'महिषी अति प्यारी' and 'विश्वनाथ धरत ध्यान शरण हैं तुम्हारी' in most copies; Drik Panchang and Bhaktvatsal read 'मोदक और मिष्ठान चढ़े, चढ़ती पान सुपारी', 'महिषी है अति प्यारी' and 'हम हैं शरण तुम्हारी'. 'नीलाम्बर' is also printed 'निलाम्बर' or 'नीलांबर'; 'दिपत' also 'दीपत'. The Khemraj booklet has a noticeably different wording in places ('नीलाम्बर धारी नाथकी शोभा अति भारी', 'भव्य मुकुट शीश राजत दीपत लिलारी', 'भक्तगण धरत ध्यान शरण आते तुम्हारी'), a sign of long folk circulation.
