Jai jai Tulsi Mata, sab jag ki sukh data ||

Meaning:Glory, glory to Mother Tulsi, giver of happiness to the whole world.

Sab yogon ke upar, sab rogon ke upar, Ruj se raksha karke bhav trata |

Meaning:In the aarti's praise, you stand above all yogas (spiritual practices) and above all ailments; guarding against illness (ruj), you carry beings across worldly life (bhava). This is devotional praise, not medical advice.

Batu putri he Shyama, sur balli he Gramya, Vishnu priye jo tumko seve, so nar tar jata |

Meaning:The first line calls Tulsi by her names: O Shyama (the dark one), O Suravalli (sur balli, the creeper of the gods), O Gramya (the plant of every village home). Sanskrit lexicons list Shyama, Suravalli and Gramya as names of tulsi. The sense of 'batu putri' is not settled; some copies print 'bahu putri', and the lexicons also list Bahupatri ('many-leaved') as a name of tulsi. The second line says: O beloved of Vishnu, whoever serves you is carried across worldly life.

Hari ke shish virajat, tribhuvan se ho vandit, Patit janon ki tarini, tum ho vikhyata |

Meaning:You sit on the head of Hari (tulsi leaves are placed on Vishnu's image in worship), and the three worlds revere you. You are renowned as the one who lifts up the fallen.

Lekar janm vijan mein, aai divya bhavan mein, Manav lok tumhin se sukh sampatti pata |

Meaning:Born in the wilderness (vijan), you came into the divine dwelling. The human world receives happiness and prosperity from you, the aarti says.

Hari ko tum ati pyari, shyam varn kumari, Prem ajab hai unka, tumse kaisa nata |

Meaning:You are very dear to Hari, O dark-hued maiden. Wondrous is his love; what a bond he has with you!

Which version we use

This aarti circulates in noticeably different copies, and no Gita Press text was available to us. We compared twelve copies, counting copies of one site's text once: Drik Panchang (same text on Astroyogi and mPanchang), Webdunia (three identical pages), BhaktiBharat (same text on Aaj Tak and Asianet News), Sri Mandir, Dharm Yaatra, Bhaktvatsal, and the 2004 Randhir Prakashan print edition, read from the page image. For each half-line we took the whole half-line printed by the most of these seven, and on an even split the print edition; no line combines words from different copies. Verse 2: 'बटु पुत्री हे श्यामा' (Webdunia, Dharm Yaatra, print) against 'बटु पुत्री है श्यामा' (Sri Mandir, BhaktiBharat) and 'बहु पुत्री है श्यामा' (Drik Panchang, Bhaktvatsal); 'सुर बल्ली हे ग्राम्या' (Webdunia, print) against 'सूर वल्ली है ग्राम्या' (Drik Panchang), 'सुर वल्ली है' (Bhaktvatsal), 'सुर वल्ली हे' (Dharm Yaatra), 'सुर बल्ली है' (Sri Mandir) and 'सूर बल्ली है' (BhaktiBharat); 'विष्णु प्रिये जो तुमको सेवे' (Webdunia, Sri Mandir, Dharm Yaatra, print) against 'विष्णु प्रिय' (Drik Panchang, Bhaktvatsal) and 'विष्णुप्रिय जो नर तुमको सेवे' (BhaktiBharat). Verse 3: 'त्रिभुवन से हो वंदित' (Webdunia 'वन्दित'); 'पतित जनों की तारिणी' (Sri Mandir, BhaktiBharat, Dharm Yaatra, print; Drik Panchang and Bhaktvatsal 'तारिणि'). Verse 4: 'विजन' (five copies) against 'बिजन' (Drik Panchang, Bhaktvatsal); 'सुख संपत्ति पाता' (Sri Mandir, Dharm Yaatra, print) against 'सुख सम्पत्ति' (Drik Panchang, Bhaktvatsal) and 'सुख संपति' (Webdunia, BhaktiBharat). (Drik Panchang, BhaktiBharat) are evenly split; the print edition's 'श्याम वरुण कुमारी' breaks the tie. Webdunia has 'श्यामवरण तुम्हारी' and Dharm Yaatra 'तुम श्यामवर्ण सुकुमारी'. BhaktiBharat's group adds 'हमारी विपद हरो तुम, कृपा करो माता', which BhaktiBharat itself marks as an extra line; we leave it out.
