Which version we use

Two wordings of this aarti circulate. We compared 11 web copies and 11 printed editions and decided each half-line by the reading of the most independent witnesses, counting identical copies of one site's text once (Drik Panchang, Astroyogi, Bhaktvatsal and The Divine India print the same text down to the hyphen in 'चन्द्र-सी', so they count as one), with the printed editions deciding where the web copies split. Wording A, used here for the refrain and verses 2 to 4, is found in the oldest printed copy (a Prayag Kumbh booklet from Allahabad whose bathing calendar fits January 1942), in the Posta Sangh Shiv Bhajanavali (Calcutta), Sadhana Sadan Stotravali (Haridwar), Karmkand Prakash, B. S. Pramindar Prakashan (Delhi, 2004), Bharat Prakashan's Ganga Lahari and Anand Prakashan's Arti Sangraha, and on Aaj Tak, Bhajan Diary and Webdunia (2021). Wording B is on Drik Panchang and the sites that copy it, Webdunia (2017), and in three printed books (Vijayeshwar Jantri, Shiv Prakashan Mandir and Agarwal Book House aarti collections). Readings: refrain 'श्री जय गंगे माता' (A) against 'मैया जय गंगे माता' (B); verse 2 'कृपा दृष्टि तुम्हारी' (A) against 'कृपा दृष्टि हो तुम्हारी' (B); verse 3 'एक ही बार जो तेरी, शरणागति आता' (A, also spelt 'शरणगति', 'शारणागति' or 'शरणागत') against 'एक बार जो प्राणी, शरण तेरी आता' (B); verse 4 'आरती मात तुम्हारी' (A) against 'आरती मातु तुम्हारी' (B), 'जो जन नित गाता' (A; some copies 'नित्य') against 'जो नर नित गाता' (B), and 'दास वही सहज में' (A) against 'सेवक वही सहज में' (B). Verse 1 is shared: 'चन्द्र-सी ज्योति तुम्हारी' is the majority reading in both groups, against 'चंद्र सी जोत' or 'ज्योत' in Aaj Tak, Bhajan Diary, Webdunia (2021) and several printed copies. 'पुत्र सगर के तारे' is in almost every copy; the 1942 booklet and the Rishikesh book read 'भव सागर से तारे', and a few print 'पुत्र सागर के'. Some copies, such as FreeBhajans and Pauranik, mix the two wordings, and a Rishikesh Durga Saptashati Homa Vidhi prints a freer version ('करुणा दृष्टि', 'परम सुगति पाता'). The meaning is the same in both wordings.
