About Vakratunda Mahakaya

Vakratunda Mahakaya is a two-line Sanskrit prayer to Ganesh, the remover of obstacles. It praises his curved trunk, mighty form and dazzling radiance, and asks him to keep all of one's work free of obstacles. It is commonly said at the start of Ganesh worship and before a new undertaking.

When to recite ·

Traditionally it is recited before beginning anything new: a puja, a journey, studies, an exam or a business day. It is also said at the start of Ganesh worship, on Wednesdays and on Ganesh Chaturthi.

How to recite ·

Fold your hands, think of Ganesh and say both lines clearly. Many people say it once or three times before a task; some chant it 11 or 108 times as japa.

Questions people ask

What is the meaning of Vakratunda Mahakaya?

It means: O Lord with the curved trunk and mighty body, whose radiance equals millions of suns, please keep all my work free of obstacles, always.

When should Vakratunda Mahakaya be chanted?

Traditionally before starting any new work, study, journey or puja, since Ganesh is worshipped first as the remover of obstacles. Many families also say it every morning.

Is it 'Suryakoti Samaprabha' or 'Kotisurya Samaprabha'?'

Both are printed and the meaning is the same: as radiant as millions of suns. Gita Press prints 'Suryakoti Samaprabha' in its Bhajan Sudha, the form most web texts also use and the one on this page, and 'Kotisurya Samaprabha' in its Nitya Karma Puja Prakash.

We checked every line of this shlok against these sources before publishing it (checked on 17 Sept 2026). The meanings are written by us.

Which version we use

Both lines match Gita Press Bhajan Sudha page 46 (read from the page image; it writes 'सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभ' as one word), Green Message and Bhakti Bharat verbatim, ignoring punctuation and spacing. Line 2 is also identical in Gita Press Nitya Karma Puja Prakash page 170. That book's line 1 has the other word order, 'वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय कोटिसूर्यसमप्रभ', which Bhajan Sudha itself also prints on another page as 'वक्रतुंड महाकाय कोटिसूर्यसमप्रभ'. With a Gita Press print on each side, 'सूर्यकोटि' is kept because it is the order most texts and most reciters use; the meaning does not change. Vaidika Vignanam has the same words with different spelling: 'वक्रतुंड' (anusvara), 'समप्रभः' (with visarga; all Gita Press prints have the vocative 'समप्रभ') and 'सर्व कार्येषु' (spacing).
