Sankalp in Pooja — What It Is, Why It Matters & How to Take It

Every Hindu pooja begins with Sankalp — a sacred vow. Understand what Sankalp is, why it's essential, and what details you need to provide when booking a pooja.

What is Sankalp?

Sankalp is a formal declaration of intention made at the beginning of every Vedic ritual. It identifies: Who you are (name, gotra/family lineage), When the ritual is being performed (the exact cosmic time — year, month, paksha, tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vara), Where it's being performed (the geographical location), Why you're performing it (your specific wish or purpose), and What ritual is being done. This precision connects the individual's intention with the cosmic forces at that specific moment, making the ritual personally directed rather than generic.

What Details to Provide for Sankalp

When booking through Archana, you'll need: Full name (the person for whom pooja is being done), Gotra (family lineage — ask elders if unsure, use 'Kashyap' if unknown), and the purpose or wish. The pandit at the temple handles the rest — date-time in Vedic calendar, location coordinates, tithi-nakshatra details. This is why booking through a trained pandit matters — they ensure the Sankalp is astronomically accurate.

Can Sankalp be taken for someone else?

Yes, you can take sankalp on behalf of family members. Just provide their name and gotra. This is common when booking for elderly parents or children.
