Online Pooja Booking: How It Works & Is It Real?

Online pooja booking means you ask a temple to perform a pooja on your behalf and pay for it online. The temple's pandit takes a sankalp in your name, performs the ritual on the date you chose, and you receive proof afterwards. You do not need to travel, and you do not need to be present.

People book this way for ordinary reasons:

• They live in another city or abroad and cannot reach the temple
• An elderly parent or someone who is unwell cannot make the trip
• They want a pooja on a particular day, such as a birthday, an anniversary or a festival, and cannot take leave
• They want a pooja for a family member who lives far away

The idea itself is old. Only the payment and the proof are new. Families have long asked a relative or neighbour who was going to a temple to get an archana done in someone else's name as well.

This is the question most people ask first, and it deserves a straight answer: whether a pooja done in your absence reaches the deity is a matter of faith. No one can prove it either way, and we will not pretend to.

What we can describe is the tradition. A formal pooja begins with a sankalp, a spoken resolve. The priest states the place and the day, then the name of the person the pooja is for, their gotra, often their nakshatra (birth star), and the purpose of the prayer. In many temples, especially in South India, the priest doing archana asks for exactly these details and chants the deity's names for people who are not standing in front of him: a son abroad, a grandchild, a relative who is unwell at home. In Vedic ritual too, the person for whom a rite is done, the yajamana, has traditionally engaged priests to perform it.

Devotees who follow this practice believe the sankalp and the intention carry the prayer, so the pooja is still yours. Others feel a pooja is incomplete unless they are present. Both views sit comfortably within Hindu practice. If being there matters to you, visit the temple when you can. A booking made from a distance can sit alongside that; it does not have to replace it.

1. Choose a pooja from our list of poojas. Each pooja page shows the price, the duration and what is included, before you pay.
2. Choose the temple. Most poojas are performed at Sree Vinayak Mandir in Delhi. Durga Pooja and Nav Grah Shanti can also be booked at Kalkaji Mandir, and Rudrabhishek at CP Hanuman Ji Mandir.
3. Pick your preferred date.
4. Fill in the sankalp details: the devotee's name, email and phone number, gotra (optional), date of birth (we work out the nakshatra from it) and your wish or intention in your own words.
5. Pay online.
6. The temple's pandit performs the pooja with your sankalp.
7. Proof is emailed to you after the pooja, typically within 24 hours. Your confirmation email also carries a link to track the booking.

If your plans change, cancel before the pooja is performed and you get a full refund. Once the pooja has been performed and the proof delivered, the service has been given, so there is no refund at that stage.

Proof depends on what you book:

• Archana (about 30 minutes): photos of the archana and a completion certificate
• Pooja or abhishek (about 60 minutes, Rudrabhishek about 90): photos, a video and a completion certificate
• Nav Grah Shanti (about 120 minutes): photos, a video of the havan and a certificate

The proof arrives by email, typically within 24 hours of the pooja. Treat it as a record that the pooja took place at the temple you booked, on your sankalp. It is not a promise about what the pooja will do for you. No honest service can make that promise, and you should be wary of any that does.

There are three kinds of booking, and they suit different needs:

• Archana: the pandit chants the deity's 108 names with an offering at each name, in your name. About 30 minutes, with photo proof and a certificate. ₹299 at the time of writing. Prasad can be delivered to your address if you add it when you book (₹250 within India at the time of writing).
• Pooja or abhishek: a fuller ritual with a path (recitation), an abhishek or a havan, depending on the pooja. About 60 minutes; Rudrabhishek about 90 and Nav Grah Shanti about 120. Photos, video and a certificate. ₹400 for most poojas at the time of writing, ₹1,600 for Nav Grah Shanti.
• Famous-temple archana: at well-known temples, including Vaishno Devi, Kashi Vishwanath, Mahakaleshwar and Jagannath Puri, a pandit at the temple takes your name, gotra and nakshatra, speaks your sankalp and manokamna before the deity, and offers flowers and prasad in your name. A simple way to decide: for a regular prayer on the deity's day, an archana is enough. For an occasion such as a birthday, a new home or a festival, a fuller pooja fits better. If your family has a bond with a particular tirtha, a famous-temple archana is the closer match. Whether you book with us or anyone else, check these before you pay:

1. A named temple with an address. "A famous temple" or "a sacred place" is not enough. You should know where your pooja happens.
2. The price of each pooja, shown before payment, with no fees that appear only at checkout.
3. What is included, in writing: which path or mantra, how many times, which offerings, and whether there is a havan.
4. The type of proof and when it arrives. Photos only, or video too? Within a day, or just "soon"?
5. A written refund policy, especially for cancelling before the pooja is performed.
6. A real way to reach a person: an email address or phone number, not only a chat box.
7. Calm language. A sound service explains what a pooja is traditionally performed for. It does not tell you a dosha will ruin your life unless you pay today.
8. No promised results. A pooja is a prayer. No one can promise a job, a marriage, a recovery or a court verdict because of it.
9. No pressure add-ons. Extra offerings should be optional and clearly priced, not pushed as "necessary" after you have paid.

Be careful if you see any of these:

• Fear-based messages such as "your kundli shows great danger, act within 24 hours"
• Promises of a specific result, or a refund "if the pooja does not work"
• Prices that change after you share your details or your birth chart
• No temple name, or stock images sent in place of real proof
• Requests to pay into someone's personal account instead of a proper payment page
• Calls pushing a costlier pooja because the one you booked is "not enough"

A pooja booked in calm faith, at a temple you can name, with a clear price and clear proof, is worth more than one booked in panic.
